Accrington: Police find cannabis farm while responding to burglary

Officers were called at 1.35am on Monday (June 5) to an ongoing incident at a property on Edmund Street in Accrington.

When police arrived, four people ran from the house, with officers letting police dog Viper take the lead on finding them.

PD Viper located two of the men in a nearby yard before finding the other two a short time later.

Officers later found 30 cannabis plants at a different address on the same street. 

A 20-year-old man from Burnley and a 17-year-old boy from Accrington were both arrested on suspicion of burglary but have since been released under investigation.

Two other men were arrested, Carl Cumberland, 41, of Malt Street, Accrington, has since been charged with burglary, while Kladio Veliaj, 24, of Edmund Street, Accrington, has been charged with cultivation of cannabis.

A spokesperson for the police said: “Our super-pup PD Viper needs a round of applause (and an extra helping of Bonios) for helping us locate four people following a burglary in Accrington.

“We were called at around 1.35am on Monday (June 5) to reports of an incident ongoing at a property on Edmund Street. We attended and on our arrival four people dispersed from the address.

“PD Viper took it as a challenge and located two of the men in a nearby yard, before locating the other two a short time later.

“Around 30 cannabis plants were later found at a different address.

“A 20-year-old man from Burnley and a 17-year-old boy from Accrington were both arrested on suspicion of burglary at a dwelling and have since been released under investigation.

“Two further men were arrested and Carl Cumberland, 41, of Malt Street, Accrington, has since been charged with burglary, while Kladio Veliaj, 24, of Edmund Street, Accrington, has been charged with cultivation of cannabis.

“Both were due to appear at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Tuesday).”
