Berndt wins SK Modified race at the Speedbowl
Waterford – Eric Berndt won the SK Modified race at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl on Saturday night.
Cromwell’s Berndt was among five winners. The others were Jake Hines of North Haven (SK Light Modifieds), Ray Christian III of Uncasville (Late Models), Shawn Gaedeke of Groton (Street Stocks) and Brody Monahan of Waterford (Trucks).
After three races the SK Modified division has been a three-driver battle. Timmy Jordan of Plainfield was second on Saturday, followed by Jonathan Puleo of Branford. Jordan leads the division with 90 points and Berndt and Puleo have 86 each. Each of the three drivers also have a win.
Tom Abele Jr. of Norwich was second in the SK Light race followed by Tyler Chapman of Ellington. Andrew Molleur of Shelton was second and Matthew Lowinski-Loh of Milford, Mass., third in the Late Models race.
Al Stone III of Durham was second and Corey Fanning of Mapleville, R.I., third in Street Stocks. Randy Burr of Middleboro, Mass., was second in the Trucks race followed by Brad Strickland of Uncasville.
H.S. girls’ crew
• East Lyme competed in the New England Interscholastic Rowing Championships and raced on Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. The first and second boats advanced from heat races to the petite finals. The first boat finished ranked 12th, the second boat was fifth in the petite finals and finished ranked 11th. The third boat also finished 12th.
Sea Unicorns win
• Clark Gilmore and Pat Sawyer combined to pitch a three-hitter as the Norwich Sea Unicorns beat the Nashua Silver Knights 8-0 in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League. Gilmore (Dartmouth) pitched four hitless innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. Sawyer (Nichols) allowed three hits in five innings with seven strikeouts and no walks,
DJ Perron was 2-for-3 with four RBI for lead the Sea Unicorns (2-3). Perron (UMass Dartmouth) hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning. Johnny Know (Nichols) was 3-for-5 and CJ Egrie (Holy Cross) scored three runs.
H.S. softball
• Five players from Norwich Tech were named to the Connecticut Technical Conference’s Charter Oak Division all-star team. Caity Flynn, Morgan Cook, Autumn Hanks, Khaiyanna Maldonado and Nyomi Barboza were honored. The Eagles lost in the CTC tournament final.
H.S. baseball
• Grasso Tech and Norwich Tech each placed three players on the CTC Charter Oak Division all-star team. Renaldo Hidalgo, Jaivon Velez and Jesus Sanchez of Grasso made the team and Norwich Tech was represented by Josh Hanks, Logan Spillane and Zack Shifflett.
