Best horse bets for the weekend: Picks for Haydock, Cartmel, Uttoxeter and more

Renowned tipster and Journalist, Ed Quigley aka ‘Longshot Ted’ provides his best bets as he seeks out all the value for the top action over the weekend.

Ted’s Bets for Saturday

  • Haydock 1.15 – C’Mon Kenny e/w – bet with bet365
  • Cartmel 1.40 – Artiste D’Ainay – bet with BetVictor
  • Haydock 2.25 – Covey – bet with Spreadex
  • Curragh 2.30 – Art Power – bet with BetUK
  • York 2.40 – Alligator Alley e/w – bet with William Hill
  • Haydock 3.30 – Raasel e/w – bet with bet365
  • Uttoxeter 3.55 – Tea Clipper e/w – bet with BetVictor

Haydock 1.15 – C’Mon Kenny

C’MON KENNY looks a solid each-way player here for the Ian Williams and Will Buick combination. The 7-year-old looked desperately in need of the run after a 406 day layoff when getting stuck in the mud at Newbury over 10f last month.

That run was clearly needed in order to remove the ring-rust, and the gelding should be much happier served by this step up in trip with that run under his belt. Eased 3lb since, this unexposed sort should easily have more to offer, and naturally the booking of Buick heightens interest. He gets the nod from me as an each-way alternative to Auld Toon Loon.

Cartmel 1.40 – Artiste D’Ainay

Daryl Jacob and Stuart Crawford team up with the 5-year-old ARTISTE D’AINAY who looks to have the tools needed to get in the winners enclosure for the first time. He has been running consistently well in defeat so far over hurdles, arriving here on the back of finishing third at Downpatrick three weeks ago.

On that occasion, and on penultimate start at Sedgefield he gave the distinct impression that he would welcome a much greater examination of stamina, so this step in distance to 2m6f should really suit (for all that it is Cartmel). There is plenty of stamina in the family, so I think this extra distance can bring about the improvement required to land the spoils here.

Haydock 2.25 – Covey

Frankie Dettori has been firing in the winners in his final season as a jockey, and he has every opportunity of another success with the John and Thady Gosden trained COVEY. The son of Frankel arrives on a hattrick, and won a minor event at Newcastle last time out in a common canter.

Going into Handicap company for the first time, he could easily take his form to new levels, and looks as though this step up to 1m should suit. It would be far from the biggest shock in the world if he were to win this and then throw himself in the mix for a hot contest at Royal Ascot.

Curragh 2.30 – Art Power

For whatever reason, ART POWER enjoys getting on the boat to Ireland, and this striking-looking 6-year-old can maintain his unblemished record in the Emerald Isle. Tim Easterby’s charge has an unblemished record of three wins from three visits to Ireland – including a perfect record of two from two over this specific course and distance.

His seasonal reappearance run at York when finishing down the field would have been needed, and should strip much fitter for that outing. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him bounce back to winning ways with the excellent Oisin Murphy in the saddle.

York 2.40 – Alligator Alley e/w

ALLIGATOR ALLEY can be a little bit of a hostage to fortune, but a strongly run 5f on the Knavesmire really suits this 6-year-old. He didn’t get the rub of the green when finishing 6th over C&D 9 days ago – he was trapped behind a wall of horses with a furlong to go, and probably did well to finish sixth in the circumstances.

He is starting to look well treated, and can easily get in the shake-up here from an each-way point of view with underfoot conditions in his favour. Danny Tudhope takes the ride for the David O’Meara yard and a big run could easily be on the cards.

Haydock 3.30 – Raasel e/w

The Temple Stakes looks exciting, and this Group 2, 5f assignment looks a hot renewal but looks a good opportunity for RAASEL to get back to winning ways. The 6-year-old has been simmering rather than boiling in recent times, but this looks a more feasible opportunity than recent tasks, and should enjoy the return to a likely quicker surface.

His return when fourth in the Palace House Stakes was a cracker granted the ground and company, and he should come on for the run. He won on his only previous start over C&D, and rates a major player here granted quick ground.

Uttoxeter 3.55 – Tea Clipper e/w

Tom Lacey trains the 8-year-old TEA CLIPPER, who has solid claims of defying top weight in this exciting encounter. The gelding simply didn’t stay an extended 3m4f on tacky ground at Sandown when last seen and this looks a much more feasible opportunity.

Quick underfoot ground conditions are crucial to him, and he should get his desired ground on this occasion. Eased to a mark of 142 he is starting to look fairly treated – he is now 3lb lower than when placed in the Ultima Handicap Chase at last year’s Cheltenham Festival. If he can put his best foot forward here, he shouldn’t be too far away with Stan Sheppard in the plate.
