Big weekend ahead as Hull City await final Championship opponents

Hull City will know the final makeup of next season’s Championship come Monday evening after the Premier League relegation battle took a fresh twist last night.

Leicester City’s battling point at Newcastle United on Monday saw them leapfrog City’s Yorkshire rivals Leeds United but still within the bottom three ahead of the final day this weekend, two points adrift of safety.

The Foxes – Premier League champions in 2016 and FA Cup winners in 2021 – will be relegated to the Championship on Sunday, if they fail to beat West Ham at home, while Leeds will suffer the same fate should they not manage to beat struggling Tottenham at Elland Road.

As it stands going into Sunday’s final fixtures (16:30), Everton hold all the aces with a clash with Bournemouth at Goodison Park, but know they must win to guarantee their survival in the top flight because a draw would not be enough to save them should Leicester see off Europa Conference League finalists West Ham at the King Power Stadium, by virtue of the Foxes’ vastly superior goal difference.

Of the three teams battling it out for survival, Leeds look doomed after their inept second half display in the 3-1 defeat at West Ham on Sunday – a defeat which included a fine goal from ex-Tiger Jarrod Bowen, with stats boffins Opta rating their relegation chances at 97 per cent, with Leicester at 84 percent and Everton 19 percent.

By the time the Premier League curtain comes down, City fans will know whether or not they’ll be trudging back to Coventry City or Luton Town next term, with the pair fighting it out in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday afternoon (16:45) and less than 24 hours later, Tigers supporters will find out if they’ll be renewing rivalries with Sheffield Wednesday once more, with the Owls strong favourites in the League One play-off final against Barnsley, following that sensational semi-final comeback victory over Peterborough United.
