Birthday dream comes true for Middlesbrough fan known for carrying radio at Riverside

A Middlesbrough FC fan, known for carrying a radio into matches at the Riverside , had his dream come true as he was interviewed by the BBC presenter Paul Gough.

Paul, known as ‘Goffy’, interviewed Eric Hughes for his ‘Goffy at the Weekend’ show on BBC Radio Tees before Eric’s 60th birthday. The two have been friends since meeting five years ago.

Eric, a resident at Redfern House care home in Redcar, was a regular at Ayresome Park, and now at the Riverside, where he is well-known for delivering updates to anyone wanting to know the status of rival teams’ matches, thanks to the large radio he used to carry around with him.

When the pair met, Eric told Goffy: “I know I’m famous for the radio, but I’ve never been on.”

Goffy said: “When he mentioned it was his 60th birthday in a little while I though yeah, let’s do it, let’s get Eric on because he’s got some great memories.”

Describing how they got together to record their pre-match interview, Goffy said: “Eric was hugely excited about the game. In fact, so excited that when I pulled up at the home where they look after him so brilliantly in Redcar, he was waiting outside and – I think I was about 10 minutes late – he was pointing at his watch.
