Blackburn Rovers handed £4m blow after Tottenham Hotspur transfer decision

Tottenham Hotspur have turned their attention away from David Raya, sparking fear Blackburn Rovers could miss out on a windfall.

Rovers are believed to have a 12.5 per cent sell-on clause on any profit Brentford make on selling Raya. The goalkeeper has 12 months left on his contract and has been publicly priced at £40million by the Bees.

The club need to generate their own transfer budget this summer and a Raya sale could net the club in the region of £3-4million, which would be a huge boost to their kitty. Rovers will be desperate for Brentford to sell rather than Raya allowing him to walk for nothing in 12 months.

However, those hopes may have been dashed with Spurs now striking an agreement to sign Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The 26-year-old is considerably cheaper after the clubs struck a deal for a reported fee of £20million.

Chelsea remain an option for Raya, although they are leaning towards sticking with Kepa Arizzabalga and spending their budget elsewhere. Mauricio Pochettino needs to add a striker and another midfielder after the sales of Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic and the likely exit of Mason Mount.

Manchester United look increasingly likely to buy a goalkeeper with no agreement reached to extend David de Gea’s contract. Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, who worked with Erik ten Hag at Ajax, has been heavily linked as their first-choice target.

Raya is desperate to leave Brentford but has not ruled out running down his contract and moving on a free transfer next summer. Of course, that would be a disaster for Rovers, who would miss out on any transfer revenue.
