The British National Road Championships, which began today (June 21) at Croft circuit in Dalton-on-Tees, near Darlington, will continue on Friday (June 23) as it makes it way to Redcar for the circuit race portion of the competition.

Following this, a road race will take place in Saltburn on Sunday (June 25) to conclude the event.

A full road closure will be in place across much of Redcar on Friday, meaning Redcar Esplanade, Moore Street, Highstreet, from Redcar Lane to Moore Street, Zetland Park roundabout to Granville Terrace, and Lord Street to Oxley Street will all be closed.

On Sunday, a rolling road closure will be enforced on the stage route, which will see roads on and around the race route closed to traffic by a police escort.

A Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council (RBC) spokesperson said these closures will be in place for around 30 minutes to allow the race to pass safely.

Glenside will be closed between the junction of Windsor Terrace and the junction of Albion Terrace to all unauthorised vehicle traffic from 6am.

Riders will tackle a tight and technical circuit race on Sunday, on a course which starts and finishes on the esplanade.

They will start on the seafront before heading down the high street and back on themselves.

Both the men’s and women’s races will be contested over 55 minutes plus five laps.

British Criterium Champion and Manx-man Matt Bostock will be defending his national title, with riders such as Charlie and Harry Tanfield ready to seize the jersey.

The championships concludes with a road race around Saltburn and its surrounding villages to cap off the event.

The race will take place around Saltburn Bank where it will begin and finish.

Men and women will follow the same 18.8km course, with the women riding seven complete laps of the course, totalling 132km and 2826m of elevation, while the men will take on 10 laps of the course, totalling 189km and 4,073m of elevation.

The course heads into the villages of East Cleveland through Skelton and past Skelton Castle, before heading through Kilton.

Riders will then drop back to the coast before tackling Saltburn Bank to the finish line.

The last climb tops off at more than 22% and with tight hairpin bends, will almost certainly create some separation between the best riders and the rest of the peloton.
