After finishing outside of the top-10 for the first time in an East Central Conference (ECC) Meet this season a couple of days earlier, Riley Brooks bounced back in a big way last week Friday.

The Ripon High School senior placed first at Quit Qui Oc Golf Club in Elkhart Lake, which was hosted by Plymouth, with a 1-over-par 36. He was one stroke better than three golfers who tied for second behind him.

It was the third first-place finish for Brooks in eight ECC meets this season. He also won the season-opening competition at Winneconne’s Lake Breeze Golf Club and tied for first at Berlin’s Mascoutin Golf Club in the second outing. His lowest finish of the season came at his previous meet, when he tied for 12th at Kewaskum’s Hon-E-Kor Golf Club with a 6-over-par 41.

Entering Wednesday’s 18-hole ECC Championships at Kettle Moraine Lutheran’s Washington County Golf Course, Brooks sits in third place in the individual standings with 47.5 points. He was 8 ½ points behind the co-leaders — Berlin’s Frank Kujawa and Winneconne’s Winston Knoblauch. He is 9 ½ points clear of Winneconne’s Casey Peters and 14.5 points ahead of Berlin’s Alex Johnson. The championship meet is worth double the points.

The top-five golfers in the standings following the meet earn first-team all-conference honors, while the next five receive second-team recognition and those 11 to 15 are honorable mentions.

Brooks’ performance helped the Tigers finish fourth out of seven schools, which matches their best finish of the season. They also placed fourth on their home course — The Golf Courses of Lawsonia.

Ripon shot a 29-over-par 169 at Quit Qui Oc Golf Club to edge Plymouth by one stroke.

Carter Brown

Carter Brown watches his shot at the ECC Tour stop at Quit Qui Oc Golf Club. Brown shot the lowest score of his varsity career with a 10-over-par 45 to tie for 23rd.

Winneconne won the meet with a 16-over-par 156 and was followed closely by Kettle Moraine Lutheran (17-over-par 157) and Berlin (18-over-par 158). Waupun (39-over-par 179) and Kewaskum (41-over-par 181) rounded out the field at Quit Qui Oc Golf Club last week Friday.

Jacob Busse also had a strong day for the Tigers as the freshman tied for 13th with a 7-over-par 42. Ripon, which was without its usual third-best golfer Drini Ahmedi, also received a boost from Carter Brown. The junior recorded his best-ever ECC varsity finish with a 10-over-par 45 to tie for 23rd.

Willard Miller ended one shot behind Brown with an 11-over-par 46 to tie for 26th, while Jayden Trochinski was elevated from junior varsity for the meet and tied for 34th with a 15-over-par 50.

The Tigers tied for fifth out of seven schools under sunny conditions at Hon-E-Kor Golf Club last week Wednesday.

They shot a 40-over-par 140, which matched them with Waupun. Winneconne won the meet with a program-record 7-over-par 147 and was followed by Kettle Moraine Lutheran (14-over-par 154), Berlin (21-over-par 161), Plymouth (29-over-par 169), Ripon, Waupun and Kewaskum (46-over-par 146).

Brooks was Ripon’s top finisher with his 6-over-par 41, which tied him for 12th place. It was seven strokes off the co-champions, who were Knobloch and Kujawa, and just one stroke away from being tied for seventh.

Busse didn’t finish far behind Brooks as he tied for 16th with a 7-over-par 42, but the rest of Ripon’s golfers struggled a bit. Miller tied for 27th with a 13-over-par 48, while Ahmedi placed 30th with a 14-over par 49 and Brown ended his day 33rd with an 18-over-par 33 to round out the golfers for the Tigers.
