BIBLE HILL, N.S. — Two traffic stops in Colchester County led to the seizure of cocaine and unstamped tobacco by RCMP.

One traffic stop occured near the Cobequid Pass toll booth at about 5:30 a.m. on May 26, where a member of northwest traffic services witnessed a vehicle speeding at 120 km/h in an 80-km/h zone.

After initiating the stop, the officer noticed signs of impairment, and the driver, a 52-year-old Bedford man, was arrested for impaired operation. A search of the car revealed that the man was travelling with cocaine stashed in two duffel bags behind the passenger and driver’s seats, in reach of the driver.

During a search of the vehicle, officers discovered and seized 40 kilograms cocaine.

The man passed a standardized field sobriety test and was released to appear in Truro provincial court at a later date. He’ll be facing a charge of possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. The man also recieved a summary offence ticket for speeding, which carries a fine of $237.50.

Second incident

Another traffic stop on May 27, at about 10:30 a.m., was conducted by Cumberland and Colchester RCMP after responding to an impaired driving complaint on Highway 104. The stop was initiated at the interchange of highways 104 and 102 in Onslow.

The driver, a 66-year-old Ontario man, was subjected to a breath test using an approved screening device, which showed he had no alcohol in his system. However, officers found unmarked prescription medication on the man, as well as unstamped tobacco in his vehicle. The man was arrested and his vehicle was seized.
