Crews called to crash while putting out unrelated Coventry fire

On Tuesday, May 16, the Newport City Fire Department responded to Coventry Station Road in Coventry for a barn fire, shortly before receiving a separate call for a motor vehicle crash. The fire was reported around 11:25 p.m.Newport City Fire immediately requested Orleans Fire Department for manpower and a tanker, and Irasburg and Newport Center Fire Departments for tankers. The fire department shared on social media that the building was a large shed, filled with hay and tires.Orleans, Irasburg, and Newport Center fire departments arrived on the scene and established a dump site for the tanker shuttle. Around the same time, officials say there was a motor vehicle crash approximately 100 yards up Coventry Station Road.Resources that were already on scene were split up to handle the crash. Additional manpower was also requested from Irasburg Fire Department to assist with the fire.The driver involved in the crash was ejected and pinned under the vehicle. Crews were able to pull the driver out from under the vehicle and transported them to North Country Hospital by Newport Ambulance Service. Fire departments remained on scene of the barn fire until after 4 a.m., with all units clearing the scene by 4:45 a.m.Officials expect some parts of the fire to continue to smolder, potentially for a few days. Newport City Fire Department says these smoldering fires are well contained and pose no risk of extension.
