International Women in Engineering Day: Crawley apprentice ‘blazing a trail for more women’ to enter aerospace trades
Reema Limbachia, 24 from Crawley, is blazing a trail for more women to pursue aerospace trades as a flight simulator technician at Boeing’s Apache Academy in Middle Wallop.
Reema has honed her technical skills over a two-year apprenticeship with Boeing, working on some of the UK’s leading defence and commercial platforms in Gatwick, Scotland, and now closer to home in Hampshire at the Army Air Corps training base. Read more via Sussex World

Navy celebrates female engineers
Female engineers and their allies converged on HMS Sultan — shore base of the Royal Navy in Gosport and home of Defence School of Marine Engineering (DSMarE) and the Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival School (RNAESS) — to discuss, champion and celebrate the role of female engineers ahead of today’s International Women in Engineering Day. Teenage girl scoops UK Young Engineer of the Year award with sign language interpretation device
Winners of the prestigious Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition have been announced at an awards ceremony at The Big Bang Fair.
Ranita Ariyibi, a 15-year old student at Colchester County High School for Girls (Essex), has scooped the top prize and been crowned UK Young Engineer of the Year 2023 for her invention of a device that enables hearing and Deaf people to communicate more easily. Read more via The Manufacturer
Train named ‘Verena Holmes’ by Southeastern in honour of the Kent-born trailblazer
Friday the 23rd of June saw Southeastern name a train ‘Verena Holmes’, who was the very first female members of the Instituion of Mechanical Engineers as well as the Society of Locomotion Engineers back in 1889.
The honour comes as part of the rail operators International Women in Engineering Day celebrations held annually on the 23rd of June, which coincides with Verena’s date of birth. Read more via Rail Advent
Women are getting into STEM careers at a faster rate than men, report finds
Jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) have long been male-dominated—but the 2023 “Diversity in STEM” report from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) indicates that the gender gap is closing.
The report, which is published every two years, defines the “STEM workforce” as those with at least a bachelor’s degree, as opposed to the “skilled technical workforce, including workers with a high level of technical knowledge but without a bachelor’s degree.” Read more via PC Mag Australia
‘Join us!’ York women engineers encourage others to follow them into the rail industry
Three women engineers based in York are urging others to follow in their footsteps.
Clare Brint, Olivia Huntly and Lorena Muscai all work for Network Rail and are based in the city.
And on International Women in Engineering Day today (Friday, 23 June), they are encouraging more women to consider a career in the rail industry. Read more via York Mix
Thales: International Women in Engineering Day
For years, Thales in Germany has invited women to the company on the occasion of INWED to offer them an insight into the industry and its career opportunities. That is why on June 23, 2023, Thales once again celebrated International Women in Engineering Day, which was founded in the UK in 2014. This day aims to draw attention to the achievements and accomplishments of women in the engineering industry. Read more via Thales
Motorsport UK celebrates International Women in Engineering Day
Encouraging more girls into motorsport engineering is one of the many objectives of the FIA/Motorsport UK Girls on Track UK initiative, which hosts events to inspire girls and women into seeing and believing that they have a rightful place in the industry.
Girls aged 8-18 are given free invitations to these unique events, which are designed to encourage an interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects.
The latest of these events took place on 22 June at Cosworth’s headquarters in Northampton. Read more via Motorsport UK
In safe hands: bp’s women engineers
To mark the event, bp featured four women engineers at the forefront of keeping bp operations safe – from high up on a wind turbine in Idaho to far out in the Caspian Sea. Read more via bp
