‘Dangerous’ plant that can make you blind spreads across Somerset

A plant dubbed Britain’s most dangerous is said to be spreading across parts of the UK. The invasive species can not only cause blindness but serious health problems such as blisters, rashes, painful inflammation and permanent blotches on the skin.

Giant hogweed has been making its rounds across serval cities in the country and passed major health risks including irritation to the skin as its toxins seep deep into the cells.

Experts at WhatShed have now created maps to help the public track where it is growing, with sightings verified by experts before being added to records. Currently, these maps show there are several Giant hogweed hotspots across the UK, the Express reports.

You can find out about any growing in your local area by visiting the map for yourself, as well as registering any sightings you may come across.

What is giant hogweed?

Formally known as Heracleum mantegazzianum, giant hogweed is part of the Apiaceae family, one which includes plants such as parsley, carrot, parsnip, cumin and coriander. However, unlike those household favourites, giant hogweed is an invasive plant that grows and grows and grows.
