Devon Magistrates: 27 men and women before the courts
A man caught riding an e-scooter while over the cannabis limit and a defendant who threw away a front door key feature in this week’s round-up from the magistrates court.
Devon’s magistrates courts sentence people for a wide range of criminal offences. They can impose unlimited fines, bans, community orders and up to a year in prison.
Here DevonLive looks at recent hearings at the magistrates’ courts in Exeter, Newton Abbot and Barnstaple.
MAY 9
Joshua Edwin Charles Greenaway, c/o Shakespeare Road, Exeter. Age: 31. On 13/08/2022 at Exeter assaulted a male by beating him. Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Have treatment for alcohol dependency. Fined £40. Rehabilitation Activity Requirement for 20 days.
Ryan Anthony Holland, Boutport Street, Barnstaple. Age: 28. On 26/11/2022 at Barnstaple drove a motor vehicle, namely E-Scooter, on a road, namely Silver Street, Barnstaple, when the proportion of a controlled drug, namely cannabis in blood, namely 7mcg, exceeded the specified limit. Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Fined £120. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months.
MAY 10
Edward James Stoddart, No Fixed Abode. Age: 35. On 03/10/2022 at Pellinore Road, Exeter, damaged various household items and electricals. Plea: Guilty. Restraining order made. Fined £80.
Douglas Andrew Campbell, Throwleigh, Okehampton. Age: 60. On 18/10/2022 at Throwleigh drove a motor vehicle on an unnamed road after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in breath, namely 108mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath exceeded the prescribed limit. Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Fined £400. Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 24 months.
Tristan Michael Cove, Sheldon Crescent, Pinhoe, Exeter. Age: 29. On 12/08/2022 at Bristol assaulted males by beating. Committed to prison for 16 weeks.
Philip James Osborne, Westhill House, Bampton, Tiverton. Age: 53. On 30/08/2022 at Bampton, breached a restraining order. Plea: Not Guilty. Verdict: Found Guilty. Committed to prison for 16 weeks suspended for 12 months.
MAY 11
Ryan Lee Alderman, NFA. Age: 29. On 08/04/2023 at Exeter drove a motor vehicle on Water Lane after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in breath, namely 69 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeded the prescribed limit. Plea: Guilty. Committed to prison for 26 weeks. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for 42 months.
Richard Arthur Roy Cassells, Belstone. Age: 57. On 23/04/2023 at South Zeal drove a motor vehicle, namely Ford Transit on the road from Homefield Farm to Drybridge, after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in breath, namely 57 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeded the prescribed limit. Fined £500. To pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £200. Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 16 months.
Gareth Griggs, Apple Way, Cranbrook. Age: 47. On 21/04/2023 at Tillhouse Road, Cranbrook, Exeter, drove motor vehicle after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in breath, namely 56 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeded the prescribed limit. Plea: Guilty. Fined £1,323. Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months.
Corey Milford-Hall, Nelson Drive, Exmouth. Age: 19. On 25/01/2023 at Budleigh Salterton drove a motor vehicle on a road, namely Salting Hill when the proportion of a controlled drug, namely Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), in blood, namely 6.5 Micrograms per litre of blood, exceeded the specified limit. Plea: Guilty. Fined £280. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months.
Kieran Alexander Pearce, Furze Hill, Church Road, Whimple, Exeter. Age: 27. On 09/08/2022 at A30, Daisy Mount Cross, Ottery St Mary drove a mechanically propelled vehicle whilst unfit to drive through drugs. Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Carry out unpaid work for 100 hours. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for 36 months.
Elliot John Oliphant, Davis Road, Dartmouth. Age: 19. Between 08/07/2021 and 11/07/2021 at Stoke Fleming having entered as a trespasser a dwelling on School Road stole approximately £260 in cash, a saw, a hammer. Plea: Guilty. Breached a community order. Committed to prison for six months concurrent suspended for 18 months. Carry out unpaid work for 160 hours.
Mark David Cooper, Horace Road, Torquay. Age: 39. On 04/06/2022 at Torquay assaulted a male by beating him. Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Carry out unpaid work for 100 hours. To pay compensation of £200.
Benjamin Hookey, Mimosa Way, Paighton. Age: 18. On 11/11/2021 at Torquay drove a motor vehicle namely Ford Focus on a road namely The Terrace while disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence. Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Participate in Thinking Skills Programme for 19 days. Carry out unpaid work for 80 hours. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for three months. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for three months. To pay costs of £660 to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Matthew George Thompson, Quinta Road, Torquay. Age: 32. On 03/02/2023 at Torquay custody when suspected of having driven a vehicle and having been required to provide a specimen or specimens of breath for analysis failed without reasonable excuse to do so. Plea: Guilty. Community order made. Carry out unpaid work for 100 hours. Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 17 months.
MAY 12
Nigel Quennell, Pincombe Road, Bideford. Age: 55. On 01/11/2022 at Barnstaple damaged a computer monitor to the value of approximately £2,000 belonging to North Devon District Hospital, intending to destroy or damage such property or being reckless as to whether such property would be destroyed or damaged. Plea: Guilty. To pay compensation of £2,000.
Tanya Perham, Marlborough Road, Accrington. Age: 34. Between the 04/06/2022 and 22/09/2022 at Bideford sent to a female an electronic communication, namely Facebook Messenger which conveyed a threat for the purpose of causing distress or anxiety. Plea: Guilty. Discharged conditionally for 12 months.
Paul Hector Willmore, Lower Moor, Whiddon Valley, Barnstaple. Age: 58. On 16/02/2023 at Mountain Warehouse, Barnstaple, stole three jackets to the value of £300. Plea: Guilty. Plus further shoplifting. Community order made. Be under a curfew for 16 weeks with electronic monitoring. To pay compensation of £100.
Shannon Marie Everatt, Vincent’s Road, Torquay. Age: 27. On 18/09/2022 at Blackpool without lawful excuse, destroyed a television and assaulted a male by beating. Committed to prison for six weeks suspended for 12 months. Rehabilitation Activity Requirement up to 35 days.
Shane Andrew McCartney, St Davids Hill, Exeter. Age: 38. ON 28/05/2022 at Exeter stole an electric scooter worth £600. Plus offences of assaulting a male, having a lock knife, fraud by false representation, stealing bags from Southgate Hotel. Committed to prison for 41 weeks. To pay compensation of £600.

David Stewart Cox, Soundwell Road, South Gloucestershire. Age: 39. On 17/06/2022 at Barnstaple damaged a front door lock by throwing away the key rendering the door lock inoperable to the value of under £500 belonging. Plea: Not Guilty. Verdict: Found Guilty. Fined £60. To pay costs of £620 to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Ria Moore, NFA. Age: 42. On 07/04/2023 at Exeter, stole spirits to the value of £54, belonging to Marks and Spencers. Plea: Guilty. Fined £40.
MAY 17
Alexander Williams, Bassetts Gardens, Exmouth. Age: 19. On 19/08/2022 at Exmouth having been required failed to give information relating to the identification of a driver who was alleged to have been guilty of an offence. Fined £387. Plea: Guilty. Disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for 28 days.
Christopher Fraser Woolmington, Medley Court, Exwick. Age: 24. Between 17/06/2022 and 20/06/2022 at Exeter drove a motor vehicle on a road, namely Howell Road car park, after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in urine, namely 221 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of urine, exceeded the prescribed limit. Plea: Guilty. Fined £276. Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 40 months.
Kay Alexandra Kitson, Old Town, Bideford. Age: 61. On 23/06/2022 having been required failed to give information relating to the identification of the driver who was alleged to have been guilty of an offence. Plea: Not Guilty. Verdict: Found Guilty. Fined £1,000. To pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £400. To pay costs of £620 to the Crown Prosecution Service. Driving record endorsed with six points.
Michael James Williamson, NFA. Age: 33. On 15/04/2023 at Premier Store, South Street, Exeter, damaged the glass in front door to the value of £250. Plea: Guilty. Discharged conditionally for six months. To pay compensation of £200.
Megan Arbella Thompson-Summers, Weston, Honiton. Age: 22. On 19/05/2022 at Honiton drove a motor vehicle on a road, namely A303 after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in blood, namely 105 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, exceeded the prescribed limit. Plea: Guilty. Fined £120. Disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 12 months.
