Eight convicted domestic abusers women need to steer clear of including one whose vicious assault led to an eye being removed
“This is domestic abuse at its worst,” was the way one judge described what one of the men below did to his partner and sadly it is a crime we are seeing go through the courts all too frequently. Assaulting a partner, whether it is a man or a woman, is never acceptable and the punishments can be grave.
Below, court reporter Martin Naylor highlights some of the more shocking cases he has had the misfortune to have covered recently.
Jan Khan
Jan Khan carried out a shocking campaign of harassment against his girlfriend and her mother during which he threatened to kill family members and “plant a bomb”. Following one argument the 22-year-old landed a “full force” kick to the victim’s face as she sat on her doorstep.
The defendant, of Long Eaton, also told the woman he would push her into a canal and drown her after sending a series of abusive messages to her and her mum over social media. And the court heard how the effect of what the defendant did affected her mental health and caused her to fall into “deep depression.”
Stefan Fox, prosecuting, said after the relationship ended, in the summer of 2022, Khan carried out what he described as “a campaign of harassment” against the victim and her mother.
Mr Fox gave a summary of some of the incidents which took place. He said there were threatening messages sent over social media accounts and arguments on the telephone. The prosecutor said: “He sent her a Facebook message which read ‘LOL can’t wait to stab a white person’ and ‘I am going to kill your mum’.”
Khan, of Peveril Crescent, pleaded guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and putting a person in fear of safety. Recorder Balraj Bhatia KC handed him a 20-month jail sentence, suspended for two years.
As part of the suspended sentence order, the judge also ordered the defendant to attend 35 rehabilitation sessions with the probation service and handed him a restraining order not to contact the victim or her mother, or go to any of their addresses in the Long Eaton area until further order.

Dylan McGee
Dylan McGee strangled his partner unconscious then went upstairs, woke his dad and told him he thought he had killed her. Such was the concern that Dylan McGee’s father had to perform CPR on the young victim under instruction from the ambulance service.
During the course of their relationship, the 22-year-old, once part of a mob who savagely attacked two men opposite Derby Cathedral, also pushed the victim down the stairs telling her he “hoped she had broken her legs”. The defendant then strangled her a second time while their baby was asleep upstairs and punched her in the face leaving her with a black eye.
Then after being arrested and bailed for that under the condition he did not contact the victim, he went to her address the very next day in disguise and told her he would lie to social service and get her child taken from her unless she dropped her complaint.
McGee denied anything had happened meaning the poor young woman had to relive her entire ordeal at his hands. And even after being convicted of a raft of offences, he wrote a remorseless letter to the judge in which he said “I am not the person I am portrayed as”.
Jailing the defendant, of Randolph Road, Pear Tree, for three years and three months, Judge Robert Egbuna said: “I have read your letter and one thing that is clear is that it is ‘all about me’. There’s no remorse in that letter, it’s all about you. It’s you saying ‘ignore what the jury said it’s all about me’.
“This can’t be described as ‘a childish relationship,’ you abused another human being.”
McGee was found guilty of charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentional strangulation, assault by beating and witness intimidation. That occurred the day after he was arrested for the final offence and went to her home in disguise.

Callum Vernon
Callum Vernon broke his pregnant partner’s jaw when he punched her in the face during an argument. Derby Crown Court heard how the victim had to have a metal plate fitted with screws following the 26-year-old’s savage attack on her.
The woman, who has since left him and had his baby, also needed wires to fix her teeth such was the injury she suffered at her violent now-ex’s hands. Now he has a new girlfriend in his life and has escaped immediate custody as it took the police almost a year to bring medical evidence to support its case.
Handing Vernon a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years, Judge Shaun Smith KC said: “Everything deteriorated. You had a go at her, she had a go at you and you lost it completely and disgracefully, you hit a woman and it broke both sides of her jaw.
“You know how badly that affected her and there was a child in the house. But I know you are sorry for what you did because you pleaded guilty only four weeks after the case went to magistrates’ court and that case took a year to come to charge.”
Vernon, now of Occupation Lane, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. As part of the suspended sentence order, Judge Smith ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work, attend 20 rehabilitation sessions with the probation service and complete a 31-day accredited programme designed to address his offending.

Carl Lomas
Carl Lomas attacked his ex-partner with such ferocity she later lost an eye. Derby Crown Court heard how the thuggish defendant woke the woman in the savage assault who found him sat astride her as he rained down blow after blow.
His vicious punches fractured her eye socket to such an extent it resulted in the eyeball having to be removed through surgery. And until she can get a prosthetic fitted she has to wear an eye patch.
Jailing him for three years and four months, Judge Shaun Smith KC said: “What you did to the victim in April last year was truly unforgivable and frankly horrendous. You pummelled her to such an extent that you smashed her face in.
“She is having to have facial reconstruction. You fractured it and they (doctors) have to keep re-fracturing it to fix it. She is a young lady who has lost an eye because of your bullying.
“Goodness knows what she must have thought as you sat astride her thumping her face. To say she has got a long road to recovering is an understatement.”
Lomas, 36, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. He has previous convictions, including most recently burglary, Judge Smith said. As well as the jail sentence, Judge Smith handed Lomas a five-year restraining order not to contact the victim or go to any address where he knows she might be.

Nicholas Glover
Insecure Nicholas Glover repeatedly punched his then-new partner because he wanted to know who was texting and phoning her. Derby Crown Court heard how the 35-year-old had only been with the victim for a short number of weeks when he first attacked her.
On that occasion, she received a text message late one night and he demanded to know who it was before grabbing her by the throat and lifting her off the ground. Around two weeks later, when the woman received a telephone call at 3 am, the defendant hit her in the face before stamping on the mobile.
The defendant, who has previous convictions for domestic violence offences against a different ex and one for revenge porn, then locked her out of her own home when she fled outside for help. Jailing Glover for 22 months, Recorder Graham Houston said: “During these incidents, she was petrified.
“This is particularly dangerous because there was strangulation and such behaviour cannot be tolerated. You threatened her and tried to stop her leaving the address and when she did she felt embarrassed at having to go to a neighbour.
“She only felt safe when she was hiding and ended up living with her mum because she was too frightened to return to her own home.” The offences took hold in Derbyshire and Glover, of Stonegate Road, Bradford, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm., common assault and criminal damage.
He has eight convictions for 17 offences including one for disclosing private photographs of a previous partner – known colloquially as ‘revenge porn’. As well as the jail sentence, Recorder Huston handed Glover a five-year restraining order not to contact the victim or go to her Derbyshire address.

Matthew Melbourne
Matthew Melbourne let himself into his ex-partner’s city home while she was at work and wrote the word “SLUT” on a mirror. The Chaddesden 32-year-old also punched the woman to the point she blacked out and stamped on her while she was on the floor during their relationship. Derby Crown Court heard how their problems escalated during the Covid lockdown when they were forced to spend so much time together. He was ordered to wear a tag which will monitor his booze intake as part of his punishment.
Handing the Chaddesden 32-year-old a 16-month jail term, suspended for 18 months, Judge Shaun Smith KC said: “This was particularly nasty and vicious behaviour. Not to put too fine a point on it, you knocked her about a bit and you knocked her about viciously, especially the first time when you stamped on her while she was on the floor.
“I am told Covid caused the problems. Well, Covid caused problems for lots of people but they did not act in the way you did.
“The offence that concerns me the most is the criminal damage. It is the most odious yet it attracts the least sentence (of the three charges). The gratuitous nature of that offence concerns me the most.”
Melbourne, of Morley Road, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of criminal damage. He has no previous convictions.
As part of the suspended sentence order, Judge Smith ordered him to attend a 31-day programme, attend 20 rehabilitation sessions and carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.
He also ordered him to wear an alcohol monitoring tag for 120 days and handed him a five-year restraining order.

Connar Shaw
Connar Shaw told his young daughter “I will find your mother and put her in A&E” before going on to attack her. Derby Crown Court heard how on an earlier occasion the 31-year-old dragged the victim out of a car in front of their children before going on to assault her.
On that occasion, their daughter “closed her eyes and covered her ears” as she felt the car shaking. And the defendant cried as he read out a letter of apology for his actions.
Jailing him for two-and-a-half years, Judge Shaun Smith KC said: “Behaviour like this is simply not acceptable. This woman is absolutely terrified, and quite rightly so, of what might happen in the future.
“You are now in a new relationship, you are going to move away from the area and you have a good support network. Your parents and family are all here to support you.
“But this really nasty case is not about you, it is about what you did and what you inflicted on (the victim).”
The offences took place in Derbyshire and Shaw, now of Firvale, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has previous convictions for violence

Asif Mughal
Former Derby man Asif Mughal assaulted his wife – the mother of his three children – after he refused to help clean up when one of them had been sick. Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court heard how the 39-year-old told the victim “it’s not my job” before grabbing, pushing and slapping her at their then-Allenton home.
The terrified woman finally got out of the room when their young daughter opened the door and she fled to a nearby supermarket to ask staff there to raise the alarm. And the 39-year-old defendant took the case to trial and still does not think he has done anything wrong despite being found guilty.
Handing him a 26-week jail sentence, suspended for a year, District Judge Jonathan Taaffe said: “This is domestic abuse at its worst. This is a situation where I am asked to accept it was an isolated incident, a one-off.
“Domestic abuse is very rarely a one-off. It must have taken your wife considerable courage to come forward and report this to the police and go through with the prosecution.
“Why? Because she’s the mother of your three children and she has been economically dependent on you. She is to be commended that she took the view that when she asked you to assist in cleaning up the vomit of one of your children and you refused she decided enough is enough.
“It was a prolonged incident, she must have been terrified, but she eventually managed to get free and summon help at a supermarket. On top of that your children were present and you do not accept you have done anything wrong.”
Mughal, formerly of Bemrose Road and now of Statham Drive, Rotton Park, Birmingham, denied one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. But, following a trial at the same court, he was found guilty of the offence. As part of the suspended sentence order, Judge Taaffe ordered him to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work, to pay £620 prosecution costs and a £154 victim surcharge. He also handed him a three-year restraining order not to contact his wife or go to her Allenton address.
