Everton blased by Peter Reid and makes Liverpool admission

Peter Reid called for “wholesale changes from the top” in order to get Everton moving on the right trajectory once again.

The Toffees secured their Premier League status with a 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Sunday (28 May), with Leicester City’s victory over West Ham not enough to beat the drop.

It has been a season of discontent at Goodison Park again, with frictions between boardroom and the terraces, and Everton legend Reid says something has to give.

“It was a relief. It was tough times for the club. I know no one’s got a divine right to stay up,” he told ITV.

“I found myself supporting Liverpool against Leicester, the world’s gone upside down.

“Recruitment hasn’t been good. We’ve got the right manager in place now. There has been a disconnect from the majority of supporters and the board. That’s got to be addressed.

“The club has got to be united and unified. We’ve now got to get some players in and we’ve got to back them. The job Sean Dyche did at Burnley was fantastic. We’ve got to get behind the manager and the staff.

“Something has to change. We can’t have people running the football club who aren’t coming to games. It needs wholesale changes from the top.

“Historically Everton are a massive football club, the fan base is massive. But you’ve got to get it right on the park. We can’t be doing this every season.”

A huge summer for Farhad Moshiri

The past two seasons have been a shambles at Goodison Park and the issues have all stemmed behind the scenes.

Poor recruitment, bad investments and chopping and changing of managers have led to two seasons of struggle, which has led to two successful – if stressful – battles against relegation.

But if things do not change, and quick, then Everton will continue to go backwards. Fresh investment from American firm MSP would be timely, especially at a time where Everton need cash to help deal with the rising costs of their new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

Farhad Moshiri must get things right in their transfer hierarchy too, though. Recruitment for the Toffees has been all over the place in recent windows.

They need a clear structure, a clear plan, and a clear direction. Sean Dyche did just about enough firefighting to keep Everton in the Premier League but without new players it seems unlikely he would again next season.

A passionate, devoted fanbase simply deserves more.
