Everywhere in the UK that WON’T get blasted by this weekend’s 30C heatwave

Parts of the UK could be hotter than Ibiza this weekend – but there is still a chance some Brits will be needing a jacket.

Balmy highs of 30C are forecast to hit the the nation over the next 48 hours, with a high pressure front likely to send temperatures soaring higher than popular holiday destinations in southern Europe.

The UKHSA has issued a yellow heat alert for six regions in response, meaning people should be aware of the potential effects on hot weather on themselves and their vulnerable friends and family.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: “In the coming days we are likely to experience our first sustained period of hot weather of the year so far, so it’s important that everyone ensures they keep hydrated and cool while enjoying the sun.

“If you have friends, family or neighbours who you know are more vulnerable to the effects of hot weather, it is important you check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice.”

This alert applies to London, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, the South East and South West – but not everywhere in the UK will be covered.

Here are some of the areas not covered by a heatwave alert this weekend:

Yorkshire and the Humber

Though temperatures could climb into the high 20s in much of Yorkshire and Humberside this weekend, ‘god’s own country’ is not currently covered by any Met Office or Met Office heatwave warnings.

The national forecaster expects maximum temperatures of 27C in Leeds and Sheffield on Saturday, but further up on the North Yorkshire coast the mercury may struggle to get above the high teens.

Certain urban environments will be even hotter and UV levels will be high across the region, however, so applying sun cream and plenty of water will be a good idea.

North East

People from the North East are known for being able to brave anything the weather throws at them – but they’ll still need to make sure they’re taking the right precautions in the sun this weekend.

That being said, overcast conditions mean highs of 19C are forecast for Newcastle-upon-Tyne for Saturday and Sunday, so it will be a lot cooler than some of the temperatures seen further south. No warnings are in place in this area.

North West

Blackpool’s beaches will no doubt be packed full of people looking for a summery day out this weekend – but they may well be in for a shock, as thunder and lightning is forecast for the area.

A Met Office weather warnings for thunderstorms is in place for parts of the North West on Sunday, with the national forecaster warning that there is a “small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly”.

Scotland

More mild conditions are expected north of the border, with 17C forecast for Edinburgh on Saturday before nudging slightly higher on Sunday.

Conditions will mostly be clear and dry however, with some chance of cloud cover on Saturday.

Regions in the far north – usually accustomed to colder weather – will actually be much warmer this weekend, as Inverness could see highs of 23C.

Scotland’s own health body, Public Health Scotland, has not issued any heatwave advisories.

Wales

Cardiff will be basking in warm conditions this weekend, and is expected to kick things off with a 26C scorcher on Friday afternoon.

North Wales will also be hot, though a thunderstorm warning will be in place on both Saturday and Sunday

No ‘Extreme Hot Weather’ warnings have been announced by Public Health Wales, who last issued one in August 2022.

Northern Ireland

Pleasant weather in the low twenties is forecast for Belfast and the surrounding regions over the next few days, although storms could hit on Sunday.

Some cloud cover could also keep things cooler on Saturday, and UV and pollen levels will also be high.

NI Direct hasn’t given any extreme heat warnings.
