Geelong shivers through chilly weather

Geelong is shivering through June as wintry weather hits the region. Here’s what to expect for the next week.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron said there had been “quite a strong” cold front that moved through the region during Monday, coupled with cold air which caused the chill.

Mr Efron said there were “very chilly” conditions recorded across the region on Tuesday, including 4.8C at Aireys Inlet, 3.8C at Geelong, and 2.9C at Avalon.

“It was a very cold morning,” he said.

“In terms of conditions for the rest of today, we’re going to see temperatures struggle to reach into the top teens – it’s really 12 or 13C expected.

“The Surf Coast will be slightly colder, with Aireys Inlet and Torquay expected to top 12C.

“In terms of rainfall, today’s looking quite dry – so a chilly but dry day.”

As of 10am on Tuesday, the temperature was recorded at 7.8C at Avalon, although it felt like 2.4C.

Mr Efron said heading into Wednesday, the temperature would be colder across the region, but the area was expected to remain dry.

“We’ll see northerly winds starting to develop, which will mean it’ll get very chilly,” he said.

“It’s looking like a pretty nice day otherwise, with no rain expected.”

Mr Efron said Thursday would be another cold morning for residents, with temperatures of 4C or 5C expected across the region, and a top temperature of 12C.

For snow fans, it’s bad news, with Mr Efron reporting no falls across the Otways.

“It wasn’t quite cold enough for snow,” he said.

“If you’re looking at maybe the highest peaks, there might’ve been a bit of sleet.

“We’re not expecting any further snow in the Otways this week.

“(To get snow) we would need the air mass to be a little bit colder than what it was – air would need to come frmo a little further south.”

According to the forecast there will be a medium chance of showers on Friday, with a possible rainfall of up to 1mm in the morning.

The minimum temperature will be 6C, with the maximum forecast temperature to reach 13C.

Residents will shiver through the weekend, with a minimum of 7C and 8C temperature on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The Bureau forecasts a 20 per cent chance of any rain and a maximum temperature of 15C for each weekend day.

“We’re well and truly in the depths of winter now,” Mr Efron said.

“We’re are still likely to see these types of systems moving through over the next few months, at least.”
