AS THE sun continues to scorch Essex, there could arguably be many grabbing the opportunity to throw down a blanket and savour delicious sandwiches and ice-cold beverages while basking in the sunshine.

Picnics have always been a popular choice for people right across the country, including right here in south Essex – especially as many settings provide spectacular views.

Therefore, we have compiled a short list of the best places in south Essex for a picnic with a view.

East Beach, Shoebury

Known for its secluded, long sandy beach, the Shoebury destination is crowned with a grassy hinterland, which makes it one of many perfect places for a picnic.

Recently, Southend beaches, including East Beach, were awarded five Blue Flag Awards – the most given to any authority in the east of England.

The Blue Flag Award, run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, is an international award for well-managed beaches with an excellent water quality.

Hadleigh Castle

The 1360’s ruin set in the rolling green hills of Hadleigh Country Park and overlooking sweeping views of the Thames Estuary gives people a unique option to enjoy a lovely lunch in the presence of history and beauty.

Parking is available at the end of Castle Lane, giving an approximately 10-minute walk to the castle.

Wallasea Island Nature Reserve, Rochford

Surrounded by the River Crouch and River Roach, Wallasea Island is known for its breathtaking and picturesque landscape made up of marshland, lagoons and the sea. It is also a wildlife haven and known for the flocks of waders and wildfowl – so make sure you keep an eye out while feasting on lunch!

The Marsh Flats trail offers a low viewpoint or the Allfleets Marsh trail offers views along the sea walls. There are benches on both trails, making a picnic blanket not essential.

There are plenty of signs that will direct you to Wallasea Island and it also boasts a free car park.

Chalkwell Beach

Just off Chalkwell Esplanade is the long, sandy beach offering a relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle of Southend seafront, making it an ideal place to enjoy the sun while taking in the crystal blue sea.

Ice creams and toilets are available close by too.

Hanningfield Reservoir, Billericay

Boasting an 870-acre reservoir and filled with mature woodland, Hanningfield Reservoir offers a great space to indulge in the displays of natural wonder while munching on some food.

It is renowned for its populations of wildfowl and its attraction to nature and wildlife.

There is also a kids adventure playground where they can run wild and sweat off a hearty lunch.
