Hyndburn’s young Ji Ju-Jitsu champions go head-to-head with UK and bag huge haul of medals
Young Ji Ju-Jitsu competitors came home with a huge haul of medals following their excellent performance at a competition.
Following on from their huge success in the GB Nationals last year, Hyndburn based Kuon Ji Ju-Jitsu sent their team down to Llanelli in South Wales for the Welsh Nationals. Team Kuon Ji won in total 12 Gold, 21 Silver and four Bronze.
Head Coach, Max Robinson, said: “It was a superb performance by the whole team especially after such an early start and long journey. For half of our junior squad it was their debut in a national competition so I was really impressed with them.

“As well as the normal training nights, the Competition Squad have been attending additional special sessions just for competition work, and their hard work and dedication has certainly paid off.
“They were all brilliant, but I have to single out Poppy Aspden who just blasted her way to Gold and set the tone for the rest of the day, her opponents just couldn’t deal with her, and Tilly Holden who fought her way to two Golds, in what had to have been some of the best bouts of the day.
“The seniors were great, doing what they always do, fighting hard but fair, with our current GB National Champions Zac Robinson and Ryan McCaffrey once again coming away with Golds.”
It was a very early 4am start on a Sunday morning when the coach set off from Oswaldtwistle carrying the 20 strong Kuon Ji Team and another 20+ support group. The Welsh Nationals included two events, with Sports Ju-Jitsu being the main event with a Ne Waza (grappling) event also tagged on.
The Sports Ju-Jitsu includes sparring, throwing and grappling all in one continuous bout. Kuon Ji’s first fighter on the day was nine-year-old Poppy Aspden who powered her way through three fights to win the Gold Medal and the first medal of the day for Kuon Ji.
Sophia Miller, age 10, came away with the Gold in her category, narrowly beating her fellow team member Georgia McGrath into Silver. Tilly Holden, age 13, put up a superb performance on the day winning Gold in both Sports Ju-jitsu and Ne Waza, as did Joseph Baron, 14.
This was followed by Spencer Brandon, 14, and Theo Valentin, 15, both winning Gold in their respective weight categories.
Alice Haslope, Georgia McGrath, Olly Valentin, Taylor Brandon, Matthew Baron and Darcie Currie from Kuon Ji’s Junior Team came away with Silvers and Bronze medals.
The Senior team did not disappoint either, with Zac Robinson, Ryan McCaffrey and Dion Fitzpatrick winning Gold, and Simon Cowans, Kieran Bradshaw, Bill Johnston and Samantha Baron each winning silver.
Kuon Ji Ju-Jitsu Association has three clubs.
