Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that transport infrastructure projects earmarked as immediate priorities prior to the pandemic, including Crossrail 2, will remain on a safeguarding footing amid inflationary pressures and funding uncertainty, according to an article on New Civil Engineer’s website.

“Crossrail 2 has been moved from a current to a longer-term priority,” TfL chief finance officer Patrick Doig told a meeting of the London Assembly Budget and Performance Committee, focusing on the mayor’s capital spend for TfL and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

It was also confirmed that completion of the construction of Crossrail would account for £47.6 million of spending this year too.

An underground HS2 station in Manchester would benefit the whole of the UK, a committee of MPs has been told.

An article on Building website says delegates from a group of Manchester councils have provided evidence to the select committee for the High Speed 2 Phase 2b bill, which will grant the power to build a high speed line from Crewe to Manchester.

The bill passed its second reading in Parliament in June last year and is now in its committee phase, which includes petitions to make changes to the proposed legislation before it receives royal assent.

The government’s current proposals are for a six-platform surface station for HS2 at Manchester Piccadilly, which the railway has estimated will cost around £7 billion.

An article on the BBC website says the work saw tracks replaced in both Clay Cross Tunnel and Milford Tunnel on the Midland Main Line.

Clay Cross, a 183-year-old tunnel, was originally designed by railway pioneer George Stephenson.

DB Cargo UK and British Steel have launched a campaign to transport 100-metre lengths of railway track to Belgium.

On Friday, 9th June, the first consignment began wending its way from British Steel’s site at Scunthorpe to Muizen, north-east of Brussels.

The enormous pieces of steel track will be used by the country’s infrastructure manager, Infrabel, as part of its ongoing programme of work to maintain and renew Belgium’s rail network.
