During the run-in, Curtis Jones earned his longest-ever run of starts for Liverpool. Between the goalless draw at Chelsea on April 4 and the 4-4 draw away to Southampton last Sunday, Jones made the line-up in 11 consecutive matches.

The midfielder has retained the faith of manager Jürgen Klopp across that period by producing surely the best form of his Anfield career, having previously been dogged by inconsistency. And yet, Jones now has a major fight on his hands to retain his place as Liverpool revamps its midfield department this summer.

Indeed, Alexis Mac Allister looks poised to be the club’s first summer signing, and he may have been earmarked for the left-sided number eight position Jones had hoped to make his own.

The Toxteth-born midfielder has backed himself, though, telling The Athletic that the prospect of multiple high-quality competitors arriving ‘doesn’t faze him’.

“I don’t care,” he defiantly said. “I am confident lad and I know that I have the backing of the staff here.”

When you look at the numbers Jones put up across his stretch of games, you can see why. ‘True tackles’ accounts for tackles won, tackles lost and fouls committed, so it essentially measures how often a player puts his foot in.
