Kent woman who was mapping pioneer among those remembered in latest death and funeral notices

An inspirational Kent woman who was a pioneer in mapping British land is among those being remembered in Kent’s death notices and funeral announcements this week. Broadstairs-born Professor Alice Coleman, who died just five weeks before her 100th birthday, directed the first comprehensive attempt to map the use of British land since the 1930s.

Her family recalled how she recruited 3,000 volunteer mappers to assist her in the Second Land Use Survey of Britain – showing the respect and admiration she was held in. In 1985, Alice researched the relationship between housing design and social malaise, with her findings prompting an audience with the Prime Minister.

Professor Coleman also won the Veuve Cliquot Award for outstanding “Women in a Man’s World”. Her family said she was “generous, gregarious, and excellent company”.

Announcing the passing of a loved one in local news media is a long-standing tradition and we are proud of the trust placed in us to make these important announcements. Every notice published in our newspaper and news site also appears on funeral-notices.co.uk – the UK’s number one site for death notices and memoriams.

Every notice remains online forever providing friends and families with a lifelong tribute to their loved one, a safe place online to share memories, add tributes, photographs and make donations in memory. Each week we pay tribute to the loved ones remembered in our area with a funeral notice and online tribute page.
