League One star allegedly raped university student after ‘putting pillow in her mouth’ – court told

A League One footballer allegedly raped a university student after he placed a ‘pillow in her mouth to stop her from screaming’. Williams Kokolo, who plays for Staffordshire-based Burton Albion, is accused of attacking the alleged victim at her halls of residence.

The attack took place after the 24-year-old woman invited him to a student party in Birmingham on February 13 last year, a court heard. The trial was told the pair had met on a dating website. They had been messaging on Snapchat as the woman wanted to get to know the player better.

But having been invited to her room, Kokolo raped the student after she returned from the bathroom to find him in just his boxer shorts, jurors were told. She was allegedly forced by Kokolo to perform oral sex on him before he also had sexual intercourse with her as she pleaded with him to stop.

The former Sunderland and Middlesbrough player also “picked up a small pillow and forced it into her mouth” and kept telling her to “shush”, it was alleged. The complainant said after he had finished, Kokolo saw her sitting on the bed with her head in her hands and asked: “What’s wrong baby girl?”

He then left the property in the Aston area of the city in the night and the woman said she later contacted police after telling her ex-boyfriend what had happened. In an interview with cops, she later told how Kokolo had treated her “like a piece of garbage” to get “what he wanted.”

French-born Kokolo, who signed for Burton from Middlesbrough last January, went on trial accused of three counts of rape at Coventry Crown Court today, June 12. Opening the case, prosecutor Nicholas Tatlow said: “The defendant is a footballer for Burton Albion, the complainant had been in a relationship but at the time had broken up.
