Lewes farmers market to feature pollinator demo June 24

Lewes farmers market to feature pollinator demo June 24

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, June 24, at George H.P. Smith Park on the corner of Dupont and Johnson avenues, Lewes.

If it rains, the market moves to the Lewes Elementary School parking lot at 820 Savannah Road.

The market will celebrate Pollinator Week with a demo by Sumner Crosby and the Lewes Beekeeping Club at 10 a.m. This is a great demo for kids and adults to learn about the life cycle of the bee, how beekeepers care for bees and their hives, and how honey is harvested. Local honey can be tasted at the Stag Run Farm tent.

The market is supporting the Juneteenth celebration, which begins in the park at 1 p.m., after the market closes at noon. The small parking lot with the portable restrooms will close to market customers at 9:30 a.m., and there will be no parking on Dupont Avenue between Johnson Avenue and the market entrance.

For this one day only, market customers may park in the field behind the houses on Dupont Avenue by entering at the end of Dupont Avenue.

The circle in front of the Fred Thomas Building at the foot of Dupont will still be open for accessible drop-off and pick-up.

The summer harvest is now coming on strong. The market’s 33 vendors will be bringing peaches, tomatoes, snap peas, blueberries, strawberries, sour cherries, mixed lettuces, kale, Swiss chard, radishes, cucumbers, turnips, spring onions, kohlrabi, stir-fry mixes, tilapia fish, oysters, hand-picked crabmeat, honey, jams, fresh-laid eggs, A-2 milk, yogurt, butter, kombucha, cold-pressed juices, fresh-baked breads, pastries and cookies made with fruit from market vendors, herb and flower plants, cut-flower bouquets, fresh coffee drinks and more.

Children’s storytime at the market, a partnership with the Lewes Public Library, starts at 10 a.m. under the yellow tent. Library volunteers will read books about farming, gardening and healthy eating. All children and their adults are welcome.

The HLFM Big Raffle returns with three prizes: a $1,400 gift certificate to Seagreen Bicycle; the Fabu-Lewes-Feast including 12 $100 restaurant gift cards; and a private, in-home, three-course dinner with wine pairing for 10 by Chef Sean Corea. Tickets are on sale at the market, and the drawing is set for Saturday, Sept. 2.

The expanded HLFM Wednesday market at Crooked Hammock Brewery runs from 8 to 11:30 a.m. weekly through Sept. 6. This easy in-and-out market now has 14 vendors. New vendors include Beachdog Farm in Georgetown, Cosmic Dog Farm in Ellendale, Lucky Penny Flower Farm in Milton, and Two Sweet Beaches Bakery in Harbeson. Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms and Gaia Coffee Co. are also now at the Wednesday market, joining the returning 302 Aquaponics, Bennett Orchards, Dittmar Family Farms, Hattie’s Garden, Kalmar Farm, Marsh Creek Cattle and Company, Stag Run Farm and Tout de Suite Patisserie. Thanks go to Crooked Hammock Brewery for sponsoring the Wednesday market.

Dogs at the markets must be under control on a 6-foot, non-retractable leash to ensure the safety of all.

For a list of all vendors, their contact information, and whether they take preorders, go to historiclewesfarmersmarket.org. Customers will pick up preorders at the vendor tent in the market.

The market processes payments from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, and Women, Infants and Children Program benefits, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Customers may go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.

The HLFM continues its food pantry purchase program. Market customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk and other food from growers at the market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to various food pantries including Epworth United Methodist Church and Casa San Francisco. The market team thanks customers for their generosity.

The circle in front of the Fred Thomas Building at the foot of Dupont Avenue will be open for handicap drop-off and pickup. Beebe Healthcare is generously allowing market customers to park in its outside parking lots; go to historiclewesfarmersmarket.org to see parking and vendor information with maps. The market’s weekly newsletter lists demos and more; email [email protected] or call 302-644-1436 to be added to the list.

The market thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2023 HLFM Market Champion, and all other sponsors for their continued support.
