With Ed Sheeran’s latest album Subtract at the top Lewis wasn’t going to take any chances with his second album Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent when it was released last Friday.

He’s been announcing gigs with Q&As up and down the country but made a huge effort in Edinburgh yesterday with his first show at 1.30pm at the Edinburgh O2 Academy then Edinburgh Queens Hall at 5.45pm and 7.45pm.

Before his acoustic gig at the O2 he jokingly told the crowd: “Thank you for making me rich.

“I was given the opportunity to do an extra show in Edinburgh, and there is always the fear that everyone’s like ‘f*** no why would we come and see you again?’

“But you’re here and it’s not embarrassing, so thank you very much.”

At the 02 Q&A which began the event before he performed he was asked about his Netflix documentary How I’m Feeling Now and admitted he though it was going to make him look cool “partying” and “having casual but protected sex” but that idea was scuppered because of Covid and having a mental health crisis as he tried to write his second album.

He said: “It wasn’t my idea.

“If I had any inkling of what it was gonna be, I wouldn’t have done it.”

The Glasgow-born singer started the week playing Glasgow SWG3 on Sunday and also took time out to be presented with a statue made by pupils at his former school, St Kentigern’s Academy in Blackburn.

Not that Lewis needs the love – he is outselling the entire top 20 album charts and as well as dislodging Sheeran on Friday is expected to take the rival singer’s current record of fastest-selling album of 2023.

With the expected news of his follow-up to 2019’s Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent going straight to the top, Lewis will remain in Scotland to celebrate as he headlines Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Dundee on Sunday.
