Live updates as firefighters tackle blaze at agricultural building in Tonbridge

Firefighters are still on the scene of an agricultural building fire after working through the night to tackle the blaze. Crews rushed to Cuckoo Lane in Tonbridge last night (May 19).

Two fire engines, out of the four sent to the scene, remain at the property this morning (May 20) to ensure the fire is fully out. No injuries have been reported and the cause is not yet known.

It was a busy night for Kent Fire and Rescue Service crews. In nearby Maidstone, crews were also called to reports of a large amount of wooden crates alight off Linton Hill in Linton. The cause of that blaze is not yet known, but the fire service says it is believed to be suspicious.

Another fire in Maidstone

Firefighters were also called to a separate blaze in Linton, Maidstone, last night (May 19). The fire service was called to reports of a large amount of wooden crates alight off Linton Hill.

In a statement, a Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Five fire engines were sent to the scene, as well as a bulk water carrier and the technical rescue unit.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze using hose reel jets and compressed air foam. Crews also used a Telehandler machine to create a fire break and stop the flames from spreading.”

The spokesperson added that no injuries had been reported, and that the cause of the fire was not yet known but believed to be suspicious.

Lane re-opens

Cuckoo Lane was closed in both directions because of the fire. It has since reopened.

At about 9.30am this morning, traffic monitoring service Inrix said: “Cuckoo Lane in both directions re-opened, earlier building fire between A26 Hadlow Road East and Higham Lane.”

Firefighters remain at the scene

Firefighters have been working through the night to tackle a fire at an agricultural building in Tonbridge – and they remain on the scene this morning (May 20).

Four fire engines were sent to Cuckoo Lane shortly after 5pm yesterday. At 9.15pm last night, a Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said crews had used hose reel jets, fog spikes and foam to extinguish the flames. They added that there had been no reported injuries.

In an update posted shortly after 8am this morning, the spokesperson said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service remains in attendance at a fire involving an agricultural building in Cuckoo Lane, Tonbridge.

“Two fire engines and the technical rescue unit remain at the property, where crews are using a Telehandler machine and a hose reel jet to make sure the fire is fully out. No injuries have been reported and the cause is not yet known.”
