Live updates: Thunderstorms hit Merseyside as weather warning upgraded to amber

Thunderstorms have arrived on Merseyside after temperatures soared to 28 degrees.

The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning from yellow to amber for Liverpool and the rest of Merseyside this Saturday. The warning came into force at 5.45pm this evening and remains in place until 9pm tonight.

The stormy weather comes after a day of glorious sunshine for Merseyside and much of the UK. According to the Met Office, very heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to cause surface water flooding that will impact travel and properties on Saturday.

Double weather warning in place for Merseyside

The Met Office has issued a double weather warning for Merseyside this weekend.

The first is an amber weather warning for thunderstorms that remains in place until 9pm on Saturday. A second yellow weather warning will then come into force at midday on Sunday until 9pm that night.

An amber weather warning is currently in force for the whole of Wirral, as well as Liverpool, Sefton and Knowsley.

Torrential rain has caused flooding on the ground floor of a city centre office block this evening.

The Met Office said: “Flooding of homes and businesses is likely and could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.”

Sky turns dark in city centre

The weather has taken a turn in Liverpool after a day of glorious sunshine.

People have taken to Twitter this evening to comment on the sudden change in the weather, with one writing: “Woahhh it’s just gone really dark in Liverpool city centre, looks like there is a massive storm about to hit.”

Another said: “Storm brewing in north Liverpool. Given how warm and dry it’s been the past few weeks, the storm’s certainly welcome.”

The Met Office has upgraded its weather warning from yellow to amber for Liverpool this evening.

Here’s what to expect, according to the weather agency:

  • Flooding of homes and businesses is likely and could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, delays and some cancellations to train and bus services are likely
  • Spray and sudden flooding probably leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Some communities likely to become cut off if roads flood
  • Power cuts likely to occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
