Liverpool insiders react to claims 29-year-old could leave them and join Real Madrid this summer
Liverpool won’t sell Andy Robertson this summer, despite links surfacing over a move to Real Madrid.
That’s according to The Athletic, who have sought the advice of anonymous inside sources on the matter of Robertson’s future.
They claim that these sources have ‘dismissed’ the idea that the left-back could leave Anfield in the coming months. Robertson is said to be deemed as too ‘pivotal’ to the dressing room to be allowed to move on.
A similar stance is reportedly set to be taken with the 29-year-old’s back-up, Kostas Tsimikas, too. Some fans spotted Tsimikas looking overly-emotional at the end of last weekend’s game against Aston Villa. This fuelled rumours that the 26-year-old could also be on his way out of Anfield.
But despite this, Liverpool are said to be ‘planning for next season with the Greek left-back on board.’ That’s that, then.
Left-backs sticking around
After reports emerged that Madrid have added Robertson to their summer shortlist, some Reds fans may have been worried. Once the Spanish giants set their sights on a player, it’s rare that they don’t get them.
But Robertson is a different breed, really. It’s difficult to imagine why the Scot would give up on everything he has at Anfield to chase the shiny Galactico lights.
Of course, that isn’t to say that Robbo wouldn’t be interested. Madrid are perhaps the biggest club on the planet and he could become the first Scot to ever wear their famous white.
We just can’t see it, though. With Liverpool already losing James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s leadership and experience this year, they badly need their left-back to stick around. You can’t imagine Robertson wishing to leave the Reds high and dry in that respect.
This news is welcome then, and hopefully that’s the end of it.
Robbo being Robbo, we could even see him having a little joke about this the next time he’s in-front of the LFCTV cameras.
As for Tsimikas, it’s also good news that he’s set to stick around. The Greece international is as good-a back-up as Liverpool could ask for. If he’s happy with the reduced minutes he gets, then it makes sense to keep him in the squad.
