Liverpool may sell ‘outstanding’ player if they’re offered more than £25m, he’s keen to leave

An offer of more than £25m for Caoimhin Kelleher may be too good for Liverpool to refuse this summer.

Kelleher is reportedly keen to leave Anfield and become an established No.1 elsewhere. And according to The Athletic, the Irishman has been attracting interest from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton and Brentford.

Although Kelleher is said to ‘relish the chance’ for more regular game time, Jurgen Klopp has already played down rumours that his back-up ‘keeper could leave.

However, The Athletic report that the 24-year-old is still Liverpool’s ‘most valuable asset’ in terms of raising transfer funds. Having failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League, the Reds could turn to offloading players in order to boost incoming sporting director Jorg Schmadtke’s transfer kitty.

To that end, it’s claimed that an offer of £25m ‘would be hard to turn down’ for Liverpool. Let’s see if any of the interested parties put their money where their mouth is.

Liverpool face Kelleher dilemma

Ask Liverpool fans if they’d take this kind of money for Kelleher and you’ll likely find a split opinion. Some will argue that it’s an incredible fee for a player with only 20 games to his name for Liverpool. One who is certain to remain as a reserve for the foreseeable future.

But others will argue that £25m is no money for a first-choice Premier League goalkeeper. Yes, he has limited experience, but he’s also proven himself capable of playing in England’s top flight, as well as in the Champions League.

Liverpool wouldn’t have won the League Cup or the FA Cup last season without Kelleher. He’s also a full international for Ireland and has been called ‘outstanding’ by Klopp. At just twenty-four, Kelleher is incredibly young for a goalkeeper.

It’s hard to know what kind of price to put on a player like that. But, these supporters will tell you, it’s more than £25m.

For us, we can see the value in letting Kelleher go for the named fee. It’s about time he was afforded the chance to be a starter at a top-level club.

£25m will represent virtually pure profit on a player who joined at sixteen and isn’t going to replace Alisson Becker any time soon.

Sure, we’d love Caoimh to stay, he is a brilliant back-up to Alisson after all. But it will also be great to see him go and fulfil his potential safe in the knowledge that we’ve still got the best around between our own sticks. In a season where Liverpool need to spend big but spend cleverly, this would be a welcome boost to the budget.
