Liverpool overcomes slow start to beat CBA for Class AA baseball title
Syracuse, N.Y. — Liverpool baseball’s 11-5 Section III Class AA championship win over Christian Brothers Academy was a microcosm of the team’s season.
The Warriors started the season with a 1-4 record but clawed their way back to the win column throughout the season to become contenders.
In Sunday’s championship game, Liverpool fell into an early 5-0 hole after a sloppy first inning, but the team fought back.
“I think (coming back from early losses helped) because we learned a lot about the reasons why we were putting ourselves in those positions,” Liverpool coach Fred Terzini said. “… I’d say after the first six or seven games or so, they believed finally that we have to go different.”
Jack Hoppe started on the mound for the Warriors and surrendered just one earned run in the bottom of the first inning but costly errors from the Liverpool defense allowed CBA to put up five total runs.
“(After the first inning) we were telling ourselves it’s still a long game,” Hoppe said. “We have a lot of time to keep it going. We all knew we’ve come back from down a lot this season. Coach said we have to keep it going. Win each inning. And we did.”
Luke Boule cruised through the early portion of the game on the mound for the Brothers. He did not surrender a walk or hit through the first three innings, but the Warriors’ bats came to life in the top of the fourth inning.
Liverpool scored three runs thanks in part to a two-RBI double from Chris Baker to make the score 5-3 midway through the fourth inning.
The Warriors kept the runs coming in the fourth inning when Hoppe helped himself with a two-RBI double to tie the game.
“I just had to do my job,” Hoppe said of his pivotal at-bat. “Try and slap it right through the hole that was open. And I did that.”
Later in the inning Chaz Anthony joined in on the fun with a triple that scored and runner and eventually himself when CBA committed an error trying to cut Anthony down at third base.
“I’ve been in a slump all year,” Anthony said. “I couldn’t find it until like basically last week, and to just come in and do that, it feels so good.”
Anthony was an All-CNY selection last season but bats eighth in the Liverpool lineup to provide the necessary firepower to the bottom of the order. Coach Terzini says Anthony may be the eighth batter in the order, but that is not a true reflection of his actual role.
“It’s a second four-hitter, not an eight-hitter,” Terzini said.

After the sloppy first inning, Liverpool locked in defensively. The Warriors did not allow another run for the remainder and did not commit another error.
“In this game, you have to have a short memory,” Terzini said. “At-bat to at-bat, play-to-play, pitch-to-pitch. There’s so much failure in this game that you can’t dwell on it.”
After Anthony scored to put Liverpool up 7-5 in the sixth inning, the Warriors added four more runs over the last few innings to salt the game away.
Hoppe finished the night throwing six-and-one-third innings, surrendering one earned run, seven hits, two walks and striking out three batters. Offensively, he went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Anthony went 2-for-4 with the big triple that scored the eventual winning runs. Baker and Gianni Toscano added two RBIs for Liverpool.
CBA (18-4) was led by Ethan Harris and Luke Boule, who each went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
For Liverpool (13-9), it is the first time the team has won the section championship since 2017 when it went on to win the state tournament.
“We haven’t talked about (a state championship run), to be honest with you,” Terzini said. “Looking ahead, it’s dangerous, and there’s really no reason to. We have no idea who we play, all that stuff. We’re just paying attention to our next opponent, our next pitch, our next inning, our next at-bat. We will talk about it now though.”
While they may not have talked about it, a state championship is on the minds of the players.
“We need states, we need to replicate (the 2017 team),” Anthony said.
Liverpool will begin its state playoff run against Section II Shenendehowa (19-6) in the regional round of state playoffs Saturday at 3 p.m. at Onondaga Community College.
