Liverpool’s ‘fantastic’ Eurovision praised by Andy Burnham

Liverpool’s “fantastic” staging of the Eurovision Song Contest has won praise from along the M62.

Around half a million people descended on the city during the spectacular two weeks of music and events coinciding with the hosting of the continental music event. Liverpool Council said it had surpassed its initial targets of 100,000 visitors and now is turning its focus on how it can maximise the legacy of having the eyes of the world on the city.

Such is the success of the city stepping in to hold the major music event on behalf of Ukraine, this year’s edition has been dubbed by some as the best Eurovision ever. Former Mayor Joanne Anderson described Eurovision as one of the “city’s greatest triumphs.”

During a landmark meeting between Steve Rotheram, Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, and partners from the Welsh and Irish Governments, Liverpool’s hosting was praised by Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester. Reflecting on the two weeks of celebrations, the former Labour MP said: “They’ve done a fantastic job on Eurovision, it reflects the strength of governance in Liverpool City Region under Steve (Rotheram).”

In a statement following the contest’s grand final last Saturday, which was won by Sweden, Mr Rotheram said: “It has been our honour to host this year’s contest on behalf of our friends in Ukraine, and it is my hope, that we have put on a show that has celebrated and commemorated the very best of Ukrainian culture.

“Stepping up to stage a global spectacle like Eurovision during one of the most turbulent years for our continent has been no mean feat but, if anywhere was up to the challenge, it was the Liverpool City Region.”
