Local tandem qualifies for state meet
DAVIS — Lathrop’s Adonis Siga and East Union’s Taylor Snaer finished in the top three of their respective events Saturday in the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Track and Field Championships at Ron and Mary Brown Stadium and will now compete in the two-day state meet beginning Friday at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
Snaer qualified last year in the girls 400, but a sore back severely limited her training regimen this year. She raced to a third-place finish in the 200 in 24.93 seconds.
“I have been hurt for most of the year,” Snaer said. “It was nice to make state even without conventional training. I have been doing bike workouts and pool workouts because I haven’t been able to run due to my back.”
Siga started the day with a fifth-place finish in the boys 110 hurdles (14.73), two places out of the third-place finish required to go to state. Siga finished third in the 300 hurdles (38.45) to punch his ticket to Clovis.
“A 38.45 is a new PR (personal record) and a new school record,” Siga said. “Now I have to run a 37 at state and win.”
Ripon’s Devin Fitzpatrick finished 12th in the boys 800 (2:01.04) in a race that was so packed the difference between second and 12th was less than six seconds.
“It was a tight race,” Fitzpatrick said. “I was expecting to go out fast, but I ended up in the back to start.
“I am a little disappointed, I think. I would have liked a PR, but my legs were a little heavy from the day before because I ran a really hard race then. I gave it my all, because that’s all I can do.”
Ripon’s Annie Wild finished seventh in the girls 1600 (5:08.47) and anchored the 4×400 relay with Emily Paxton, Starla Skiles and Jenna Skavdahl to a seventh-place finish (4:07.27).
“I am so thankful I got to run for this team and for everything everyone has done for me,” Wild said. “I am ecstatic with how I have run this season and I finished off the season in a position that I feel was OK with me.”
Sierra’s Shomari McKnight was 14th in the boys shot put (45 feet, 4 inches).
“I had a good season, a good year,” McKnight said. “Today could have been a lot better, but I am just glad I got to be there.
“I didn’t like how I performed, but that just means more work to do and more ways to improve going into college.”
Other participants on Friday included Manteca’s Julian Moncada (boys 100, eighth, 10.99), Skiles (300 hurdles, seventh, 47.04), Lathrop’s Tamaine Lowery (girls 1600, 19th, 5:28.37; 3200, 22nd, 11:57.97), Ripon’s Jade Thommes (girls pole vault, seventh, 10-6), Ripon’s Olivia Maragos (girls long jump, 15th, 16-0 ¾), Ripon’s Gabby Delgado (girls discus, 10th, 110-10), Sierra’s Olivia Knott (girls long jump, 21st, 14-7) and Lathrop’s Alaba Olaleye (girls long jump, 13th, 16-3 ½).
