Louth Division 2 roundup: Kilkerley inflict first defeat on Dundalk Gaels

Louth Division 2 roundup: Kilkerley inflict first defeat on Dundalk Gaels

HOLLYWOOD DEVELOPMENTS DIVISION 2 ROUND 7

ROCHE EMMETS 4-17
CLAN NA GAEL 3-7

Roche Emmets continued their good run of form when they made it three wins on the bounce with an impressive victory over Clan na Gael in Dundalk on Friday night. The win saw the Faughart side move into third place in the table and just a point behind their opponents.

For the Clans it was a disappointing evening as they saw their unbeaten start to the season come to an end while they also missed the opportunity to draw level at the top with Dundalk Gaels.

In what was a good mid-season test for both teams, it was the visitors who had the better of the game throughout, and after a fine first half display they were very much in charge.

Goals from Barry O’Hare and Shane Byrne had their side on the front foot and although Jason Cullen replied for the Clans, Roche had a healthy 2-10 to 1-3 lead at the break.

The Clans were unable to produce a fightback in the second period despite further goals from Conor Noonan and Sean O’Hanlon, as Roche stretched their advantage at the final whistle to 13 points thanks to goals from DD Reilly and another from Shane Byrne.

COOLEY KICKHAMS 1-15
GLEN EMMETS 0-7

Cooley Kickhams’ return to form continued at home to Glen Emmets on Saturday night as they chalked up an 11-point victory.

A blistering start saw Cooley take charge of this contest and although the Emmets fought back, they were unable to bridge the gap.

Cian Connor and Michael Rafferty were among the points early on for the hosts, but they really grabbed hold of the game in the 16th minute when Enda O’Neill scored the only goal of the game to help his side lead by 1-4 to no score.

Alex Fowler gave his side hope with three successive points followed by another from Sean Byrne to cut the gap to 1-5 to 0-4 at half time.

The Tullyallen men were unable to continue that momentum at the start of the second half as Cooley regained control and went on to win comfortably despite the Emmets hitting points from James Butler, Kealan O’Neill and Eoghan Maguire.

KILKERLEY EMMETS 1-14
DUNDALK GAELS 0-12

Kilkerley Emmets inflicted a first defeat of the season on Dundalk Gaels to blow the Division 2 title race wide open.

The Dundalk side went into the game on the back of six successive wins, but they were unable to match a determined Kilkerley side with a goal from Conor Quigley proving decisive at The Ramparts.

The Dundalk side had first half scores from Liam O’Connor, Thomas O’Connell and Eanna McArdle and it seemed that The Ramparts men would have a slight edge going into the break.

However, Quigley took centre stage just before the interval as he struck a goal and a point to send his team in leading by 1-6 to 0-6. Tadhg McEnaney (3), Cormac Mallon and Ewan McEnteggart were also on target for the visitors.

The second half remained closely contested throughout but the Emmets always appeared to have the slight advantage.
Conor Quigley added three points to his tally while Tadhg McEnaney and Conal McEnaney were also on target to keep their side in the driving seat. Thomas O’Connell carried the fight for the Gaels as he landed six points, but it wasn’t enough to deny Kilkerley an impressive win.

ST KEVINS 3-21
ST JOSEPHS 3-10

St Kevins moved into second place in the Division 2 table and cut the gap to leaders Dundalk Gaels with an 11-point win over St Josephs at Philipstown on Saturday evening.

The hosts got off to a great start as a TJ Doheny point was followed by a Cian Callan goal, only for Craig Doherty to reply with a goal at the other end.

The Kevin’s hit three points in a row from TJ Doheny, Tom Matthews and Paul Duff with Jack Mulligan responding for the Joes.
Two pointed frees from TJ Doheny and Cian Callan pushed the Kevin’s lead out to five. The Joes then hit three in a row from Conor Neary, Craig Doherty and Alan Quigley to leave the Kevin’s ahead by 1-6 1-4 at the end of the first quarter.

The teams traded points in the second quarter, and it looked as if the hosts would go in at the break in front, only for Alan McKenna to send an unstoppable shot to the Kevin’s net to tie up the scores at 2-6 to 1-9.

A Sean Meade goal early in the second half helped the Kevins move six points clear but a second goal from McKenna and a Doherty point had the Joes right back in the mix when trailing by just 2-13 to 3-8.

The final quarter saw the Kevin’s pull away, scoring at will, hitting 1-9 to the Joes two points. Cian Callan added the goal to help secure a comfortable win in the end.

LANNLEIRE 3-10
O’CONNELLS 0-7

Lannleire got their first win in this league when they had a 12-point victory over O’Connells in Dunleer on Saturday night.

The visitors could have got off to a flyer when they were awarded a penalty in the third minute after Robert Quigley was taken down in the area, but Lannleire keeper Liam Callan made a great save from the Jackie Agnew hit spot kick.

O’Connells got on the scoreboard first with a point from Ciaran O’Brien, but a couple of minutes later Darragh Malone nearly soloed half the field and shot to the net.

The same player got his side’s first point of the game a minute later. A brace of points from Quigley left it a one-point game after 15 minutes, 1-1 to 0-3.

The home side started to dominate the play and landed the next three points from Malone, Bob Murphy and Paul Callan.

With five minutes to go in the half the Dunleer side were awarded a sideline ball which Malone kicked into the area, and it seemed to deceive everyone as it landed in the back of the net for his and his team’s second goal of the game. That was the last score of the half that left the home team leading 2-4 to 0-3.

The home side had the perfect start to the second half when a misplaced pass found Malone and he completed his hat-trick with aplomb. The sides shared the next four points to leave the score 3-7 to 0-5 with just over ten minutes to go.

Quigley added two points to the Bellingham tally, both from frees, but the Dunleer men finished with three more points from substitutes Mark Dunne and a brace for Paul Callan to seal their first victory and leave O’Connells firmly rooted at the bottom of the table.

With less than ten minutes remaining, Dean Maguire levelled the game for the Dundalk side and that looked to be that, but the Ireland’s second successive loss was about to be inflicted by Rovers.

Having led by three at half time and succumbing to an equaliser, Hunterstown saw James Rogers dig deep and strike the vital late goal. Glen Matthews then secured the precious victory for Colm Donnelly’s men.
