Manchester United will not sign Wout Weghorst or Marcel Sabitzer on permanent deals this summer.

Erik ten Hag is set for another busy summer at Old Trafford as he tries to bolster his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League. The Red Devils finished third in the Premier League and will return to Europe’s elite club competition after a year away in the Europa League.

Although United have more game to go before the end of the season when they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday, Ten Hag has already started re-shuffling his squad. According to the Daily Mail, United are not set to hand Weghorst or Sabitzer permanent contracts in the summer transfer window.

Weghorst, 30, joined on loan from Burnley in January and has scored just twice in 30 appearances. He has failed to find the back of the net in the Premier League, however, and is set to return to the Clarets following their promotion to the top flight. Weghorst spend the first-half of the campaign, netting nine times in 18 games.

As for Sabitzer, the Austrian was United’s final signing of the January window. Ten Hag was rocked by the news that Christian Eriksen was ruled out for up to three months with an ankle injury and desperately needed to sign a midfielder before the end of deadline day.

He turned to Bayern Munich star Sabitzer for the rest of the season and the 29-year-old has impressed during his short time at the Red Devils. Sabitzer has made 18 appearances in a United shirt, scoring three times, including once in the FA Cup on their route to the final to face City this weekend.

They won’t be the only players to leave United this summer. The club announced earlier this month that Phil Jones will depart at the end of his contract. Jones signed from Blackburn in 2011 and has since played 229 games, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League.

Tom Heaton is also set to move on to pastures new when his United contract expires. The goalkeeper has been an excellent No.2 to David de Gea this season and featured in the Carabao Cup. Jack Butland will return to Crystal Palace, while De Gea is expected to sign a new contract – despite his contract running out next month.
