Manchester United legend Andy Cole shares the story of his Jamaican dad as part of Windrush anniversary

Andy Cole is a legend on the football field, with many records of his sporting prowess to his name.

He and Alan Shearer shared the joint record for the most goals in a 42-game season, until it was very recently broken by Erling Haaland. Cole also helped Manchester United secure a treble win in 1999.

However, the footballer’s early life and that of his family’s, is strikingly different to the bright lights and success of the footballing world. The 51-year-old is a direct descendant of the Windrush generation, as his dad, Lincoln emigrated to the UK from Jamaica in 1957, the Mirror reports.

Lincoln worked as a coal miner in Gedling, Nottinghamshire for 22 years from 1965 to 1987. As the 75th anniversary of Windrush approaches this week, the contribution of Black Caribbean miners are among the many stories that are being told of the generation.

“My father was one of the first,” says Cole. “He wasn’t an individual who would shout about it. But when he passed away, coming up to a year now, I got to find out just how revered my dad was for being one of the pioneers.

“It made me feel really special.” The Digging Deep, Coal Miners of African Caribbean Heritage exhibition brought Lincoln’s story to life. This was curated three years ago by historian Norma Gregory, at the Woodhorn Museum in Ashington, Northumberland, as part of The Black Miners Museum Project.
