Mary Jane’s Heartbreak Might Reunite Her With Spider-Man

Mary Jane’s Heartbreak Might Reunite Her With Spider-Man

When it was revealed that Mary Jane had children in Zeb Wells’ run on The Amazing Spider-Man, the immediate response from fans was to question how she could possibly reunite with Peter Parker. Unfortunately, The Amazing Spider-Man #26 (by Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz, and Erick Arciniega) answered that question in the cruelest way possible. It was revealed that Mary Jane’s children were in fact never real, and merely complicated bindings used by Rabin to find her. With their purpose fulfilled, the children were wiped from existence, leaving Mary Jane to grieve her loss.

As traumatic as this experience is though, it might actually provide her with a path back to Peter. It’s no secret that fans heavily dislike her current relationship with Paul, but the sudden loss of their children might force their relationship into a downward spiral that could result in them breaking up. If so, then the chance exists that she could try to patch things up with Spider-Man after all.

Mary Jane’s Loss May Lead Her Back to Spider-Man

Mary Jane and Paul's children fade away.

While Mary Jane has made it clear in previous issues that she is devoted to Paul and her kids, there is reason enough to doubt that her feelings for Peter are completely gone. Coupling this with the sudden realization that the children she came to love never truly existed, puts her in an emotionally complex state. To be clear, the fact that the children weren’t real doesn’t invalidate the pain she feels right now. For four years, she looked after and cared for them, only for the man she was protecting them from to destroy them in the cruelest possible way. No matter what happens, this experience will stay with Mary Jane for the rest of her life.

With her children gone, Mary Jane will be forced to reconsider her relationship with Paul. The main reason Mary Jane fell in love with him was that he was the only other adult male around who wasn’t trying to kill her during the years they were isolated on an alternate Earth. However, it is debatable whether this relationship would have developed had the children not been a part of their lives. Mary Jane and Paul effectively became their parents out of necessity, and the little family they cobbled together could very well have been the only reason she seemingly fell for him.

Mary Jane even told Peter that the reason she can’t be around him was due to her priorities. Her responsibility to the children she took in to give them a good home and her promise to not put the burden of raising them on Paul’s shoulders just so she could be with Peter. She wouldn’t have said this if she didn’t have lingering feelings for him. And, the twisted turn of events may force her to be more honest about where her heart truly lies.

Mary Jane and Peter Parker’s Romance May Ruin Lives

Mary Jane finds out that her kids were never real.

Then there is Paul to consider. He also lost something when the children vanished. He may not have been keen on the idea of raising them at first, but he came to love them and this loss is undoubtedly a blow to him as well. However, unlike Mary Jane, he doesn’t have anyone else, and if the grief begins to pull them apart then he could go down a much darker path. Paul is the son of Rabin and has an understanding of the reality-warping science that he employed. If he and Mary Jane begin to drift apart because they don’t have enough in common or even blame one another for the tragedy, it might push him to become his father.

He might try to recreate his children or perhaps even alter Mary Jane to make her stay with him. Whatever the case, this event will be a trial for them, and if the point was to pave the way for Mary Jane and Peter’s reunion, then Paul will be the one who suffers the most. But, as twisted as it sounds, fans are likely going to be very happy that she’s lost so much if it means she is one step closer to restoring Marvel’s most iconic romance.
