New Oxford-Witney-Carterton rail link ‘feasible’, according to new study

A new study has been published on the feasibility of a new railway route connecting three towns to Oxford. The preliminary strategic outline case was commissioned by Oxfordshire County Council, following proposals from the Witney Oxford Transport Group.

The Carterton-Witney-Oxford Rail Corridor (CWORC) could relieve pressure on the A40, according to councillors. The aim of the study was to establish if there is a strategic need for the proposed railway line and to give an indication of the likely investment required.

The study has shown that building a rail link would be feasible and could be justified in transport strategy terms. However, the study has also identified a number of planning and environmental issues.

As well as these issues, it also warns about the high financial cost and difficulty involved in undertaking such a project. However, if it went ahead, it would be predicted to be profitable, according to Oxfordshire County Council.

Councillor Duncan Enright, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Travel and Development Strategy, said: “We are delighted to see the publication of this study exploring future sustainable options for transport between West Oxfordshire and Oxford.

“We really hope that it will prompt much-needed government investment into ambitious rail enhancement in Oxfordshire and take pressure off the overstretched A40. A rail link could save more than one million car miles and 100 tonnes of carbon emissions from car use every year as well as making travel easier for commuters and other visitors.”
