Norwich: Family Fish Bar in Silver Road NR3 has vegan menu

Family Fish Bar, in Silver Road, was taken over in December by Shelley Plant and her husband Mahmut Harput.

When they took over they knew they wanted to bring their family-friendly and customer-focused style to the postcode.  

So, they’ve spent the last few months speaking to their customers about what they would like to see added to the menu alongside the classic chippy menu people know and love.  

Shelley said: “We added a vegan sausage straight away and it became popular – we have a separate area for cooking vegan so there is no chance of cross-contamination and I think people like that.”

But the popular chippy didn’t stop at a vegan sausage.  

Shelley said: “What we have done is listen to people in the area – we have more than 50 years of experience in the takeaway industry, and we find that this works first.  

“People tell me what they want and then I try to source it for a good price, test the recipe until it’s perfect and then we put it on our menu at very competitive prices.”

Added to their ever-expanding vegan menu is fishless fish, pea fritter and they even offer a battered banana blossom, which surprises most people.  

Shelley said: “So many meat eaters try the banana blossom, they are just too intrigued.

“I’ve had it, and I was shocked, it flakes exactly like fish does, and I marinade it in a secret recipe to make it taste really good.”  

And the Family Fish Bar is showing no signs of stopping with their ever-evolving menu.

On the early success of her business, Shelley added: “You must never be frightened to move with what the customers want, they put pounds in the till – without them you have no business.”
