One taken to hospital after fleet of 999 crews race to crash scene which shut major road

One person has been taken to hospital after a crash closed a busy stretch of road.

A fleet of 999 crews were called to Seal Sands Link Road in Billingham on Tuesday morning following a two car collision. The incident happened just before 9.30am, forcing police to close the A1185 and motorists to take alternative routes.

An air ambulance was spotted landing near the scene alongside road ambulances and two fire engines. One casualty was taken to James Cook University Hospital via road ambulance following the collision.

Drivers were being asked to avoid the area as Cleveland Police taped off entry to the road in both directions, with a police vehicle and cones blocking access. Fire crews from Stockton and Hartlepool attended the incident where firefighters assisted paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS).

Residents in the area were shocked by the huge emergency response, with one saying that there was “always accidents on the link road”. Another said that they heard sirens and saw a “loads of vehicles with sirens flying down”.
