Peabody’s girls lacrosse team wins 20-19 in overtime (ROUNDUP)

When a lacrosse team allows 19 goals in a single game, it usually doesn’t end well. That said, you haven’t met the Peabody Tanners.

Peabody (11-5) took on Boston Latin (6-10) on Tuesday, escaping with a 20-19 win in overtime. Ally Bettencourt scored a beauty in the extra period – one of her seven goals to go with three assists. Brooke Lomasney scored nine alongside three assists.

Madi Barrett ripped four goals and dished out an assist, while Caitlin Snow made seven big saves when it mattered most.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Swampscott 10
Gloucester 8

The Peabody game wasn’t the only one down to the wire, however. Swampscott’s girls lacrosse team (11-5) defeated the Fisherman 10-8 in enemy waters, and the offense was as versatile as ever.

Avery Laundry (2 goals, 1 assist), Chloe Puzzo (1 goal), Abby Eichler (2 goals, 2 assists), Brooke Waters (3 goals), Riley Johnson (1 assist), and Coco Clopton (2 goals, 1 assist) all poured it on offensively, while Lilah Caplan made five saves between the pipes.

BASEBALL

Lynn Tech 14
Nashoba 7

Lynn Tech (8-8) faced Nashoba on Tuesday. A few hours later, the Tigers doubled up the Wolves. Dylan DiFillippo got the start on the mound, retiring seven.

Kolby Bucklin went 4-for-5 (2 singles, 2 doubles) to drive in four. Mario Giordano batted 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Roman Valdez also added two RBI.

“Just a complete team effort all the way around,” Lynn Tech coach Eddie Lewis said. “We played some good baseball today [and] the guys are doing a great job playing together. After starting out the year 1-5, we have really done a great job of taking one game at a time… [We are] one step closer towards our goal.”

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 1
Gloucester 0

St. Mary’s (17-1) just can’t be stopped. The Spartans took care of Gloucester with a shutout victory as Anna Fringuelli dominated on the mound (2 hits allowed, 6 strikeouts). She also ended the game with a double play on an attempted squeeze.

Ashanthy Pardilla drove in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Somerville 6
Saugus 5

Saugus’ softball team (11-8) has been on a hot streak lately, but met its match against Somerville in a 6-5 final score. Taylor Deleidi went the distance in the loss, allowing just six hits to go with five strikeouts.

Devany Millerick went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Ava Rogers added a triple for an RBI, and eighth grader Sydney Deleidi impressed with a 2-for-4 performance.

Danvers 10
Lynn Classical 3

Lynn Classical (11-7) scored some runs, but was bested by Danvers (13-6) in enemy territory Tuesday. MeKayla Poisson batted 2-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases to lead the Rams.

Rachel Dana was 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and two RBI, and Lauren Wilson had the other RBI for the Rams. Classical coach Joe Morin credited Danvers’ defense, adding the Eagles robbed some would-be hits in the outfield.

Swampscott 9
Manchester-Essex 8

Mia Tringale pitched seven strong innings in relief to earn the win, as Swampscott’s softball team won a nail-biter against Manchester-Essex.

Hayden Haskell knocked in three runs, and Olivia Barletta was perfect at the plate, scoring four times.

Lynn Tech 1

Camila Rufino Santos stole a base in the first inning, and was driven home by Keila McGregor after a center field hit. Unfortunately for the Tigers, who lost 21-1 Tuesday, that would be all of their scoring.

Zoe Wilson in center field, Bella Walcott at shortstop, Mahlyna Williams at second, and Denva Curry at third all made some impressive plays on defense.

“Our team proceeded to play well defensively, but was not able to shut down Northeast’s strong hitters,” Lynn Tech coach Beth Mercaldi said.

BOYS LACROSSE

St. John’s Prep 15
St. John’s Shrewsbury 5

The St. John’s Prep Eagles (16-2) concluded their Catholic Conference regular season with a 15-5 win against St. John’s Shrewsbury, headlined by six unanswered goals in the third quarter.

With the victory, The Prep secured a share of the Catholic Conference championship for the fourth consecutive season (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023).

Jimmy Ayers led the way with four goals and an assist, while Will Sawyer scored two goals and dished out two assists. Cam McCarthy and Nate Jones added two goals apiece.

Jack Doherty won 9 of 18 faceoffs, while Gavin Kornitsky made eight saves on 13 shots.

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 3
Hamilton-Wenham 2

Marblehead’s boys tennis team (15-3) continued its stellar season with a win against Hamilton-Wenham Tuesday. Mika Garber and Matthew Sherf grabbed singles wins, and the combination of Etan Farfel and Jayden Janock got the job done in doubles.

Marblehead 0

Simply put, and as Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman said, “Hamilton-Wenham showed why they are the defending Division 4 state champions.” Marblehead (13-5) lost 5-0 Tuesday.

Charly Cooper fought hard in third singles, but to no avail. The duo of Aoife Bresnahan and Lucia Levin played well in second doubles, but fell 3-6, 4-6.

Lynnfield 4
Swampscott 1

Paige Martino (6-3, 6-1) and Maddie Sieve (7-5, 7-6) shined in singles as the Lynnfield girls tennis team handled Swampscott 4-1.

Leticia Marafon and Lily Alves of the Pioneers won in come-from-behind fashion in first doubles, and Ella Hayman and Ciara Long followed with a nice win in second doubles.

Swampscott’s point came from Laine Foutes, who won her singles match 6-4, 6-2.

VOLLEYBALL

Greater Lawrence 3
Lynn Tech 1

Just a day after its first win in program history, Tech fell to Greater Lawrence 3-1 in set scores of 16-25, 18-25, 26-24, and 20-25. Elmer Duran led the charge with 15 digs, six assists, two aces, and a block.

Didlaire Jacques Jr. had seven kills and six blocks, while Jayden Tran had 15 digs and an ace. Jephthah Onyighichi added six kills, three blocks and two aces.

Continuing the versatile attack, Miguel Najarro recorded seven digs, three assists, two aces and a kill, while Anthoni Diaz tacked on two kills, two digs, and a block.
