Plans revealed for 15-bed HMO in heart of Yeovil town centre
Plans have been revealed to convert an office block in the heart of Yeovil town centre into a 15-bedroom HMO (House in Multiple Occupation). A planning application is seeking to change the use of the former Porter Dodson offices at Church Path, next to St John’s Church.
Planning documents reveal the large facility would see residents live in small apartments while sharing communal facilities. The 15 “intended occupiers” of the HMO would be employees of Altogether Care, a nursing care and assisted living provider, and they would share one living room, one shower room and one bathroom.
Planning documents reveal the proposed facility would have eight car parking spaces. The first and second floors of the building are currently vacant, while the ground floor is currently occupied as an office by the applicant, Altogether Care.

Planning documents state: “Over the years Altogether Care has expanded and now has numerous operations across the South West offering professional care and support to the community. It is clear that care homes are an invaluable part of the drive to reduce the pressure on NHS hospital care.
“It is understood that Yeovil Hospital could be operated more efficiently if places could be found in care homes for essentially fit patients currently under the care of the hospital. One of the major pressures on care home providers is that of staff recruitment and retention.
“A significant factor in that pressure is the lack of quality rental accommodation offered and available at affordable rents for those seeking employment within the care sector. This proposal is an innovative way for Altogether Care to attend to its staffing needs.
“This proposal will make a valuable contribution towards the current housing land supply shortfall and will deliver affordable residential accommodation. It is considered that no adverse impacts of developing the site in the manner proposed will arise so as to outweigh the benefits of meeting future housing needs.”
Planning documents add: “Due to its town centre setting and proximity to local shops and supermarkets the site is considered to be within a sustainable location. The site is within close walking distance of Yeovil Bus Station and other means of public transport.
“The proposed change of use seeks permission for a 15-bed HMO, which will be occupied by employees of Altogether care. The HMO will provide a communal living room, two communal kitchens/dining areas, a shower room, a bathroom and three toilets.”
