Report: Sheffield Wednesday want League One captain Regan Poole

Sheffield Wednesday are keen to sign Regan Poole with the defender set to become a free agent in the coming weeks. The youngster has been with Lincoln City for two years but hasn’t agreed terms over a new deal.

According to The Star, Wednesday are trying to get a deal for the versatile performer over the line. He’s open to a move this summer and is yet to play in the second tier.

Poole was picked up by Manchester United from Newport County in 2015. He was tipped for a really bright future and has spent time on loan with Northampton and back at Newport.

The talented defender was signed by MK Dons on a free transfer in 2019. It was there he started to really showcase what he was capable of and after a couple of years there, he was picked up by the Imps.

Why Chelsea FINALLY Turned A Corner.

Poole has made 131 appearances for Lincoln and their fans might be sad to see him leave this summer. During the 2022/23 campaign, he scored three times, registered four assists and also showcased his versatility.

Mark Kennedy utilised the player at centre-back on 32 occasions last season. However, he also played him as a right-sided wing-back on 20 occasions and it was a role he thrived in.

Poole had the respect of his teammates too. He was the captain on several occasions and it will be somewhat disappointing for Lincoln that he’s set to depart the club on a free transfer.

Kennedy enjoyed working with the player last season. After he made his 100th appearance for the League One outfit, he called him ‘phenomenal’ and stated how proud he was of the player.

Wednesday want Poole

At 24-years-old, the versatile performer looks like a decent player for Wednesday to be targeting. Darren Moore will be keen to bolster his squad, with several of his promotion-winning squad now departing.

Poole ticks a lot of boxes from a Wednesday perspective. He’s young, can play in a number of positions and is also a player that wouldn’t command a transfer fee this summer.

Moore would certainly welcome a right-sided wing-back coming into the squad. With several defenders leaving, Liam Palmer might be considered an option as the right-sided central defender.

Poole would surely welcome the chance to sign terms at Hillsborough. It would see him play Championship football for the first time and ultimately, it would be a step up for his career.

Rumour rating: 8/10 – We like the sound of this one a lot. To be captaining a League One side at 24 showcases what type of character he is and that can only be a good thing for Wednesday.

Moore will be keen to add some energy to his squad this summer. At 24, Poole could be a Wednesday star for years to come and on a free transfer this is one the club must get over the line.
