Sadness as Battle of Britain Memorial flypast over Warwickshire cancelled

Hundreds have shared their sadness after a much-anticipated flypast to mark Armed Forces Day was cancelled. All flights of the historic planes have been paused indefinitely after an engine fault was found.

Aircraft from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, including a Lancaster and Spitfires, were due to take part in an array of events at locations, including Warwickshire. It would have flown past the Long Compton Fete in Warwickshire at around 2pm.

However, the Royal Air Force said a fault had been found on a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and flying had been paused. In a statement, they described the move as ‘disappointing’ which was echoed by many throughout the country.

Keith Johnson said: “Hope this problem is resolved soon, and these great historic aircraft are back in the skies.” Jan Hutchinson wrote: “Such a shame, but totally support this decision as the safety of the aircrew and aircraft must be paramount.”

Lawrence Bassett said: “It is sad and disappointing to hear, but safety is very important and cannot be ignored. I hope this investigation will not find anything too serious and these historic aircraft will not be on the ground for too long.”
