Guy Waites confirms that Sagarmatha is up for sale.

Having arrived back on dry land earlier this week after his 288 day solo circumnavigation of the globe, Scarborough skipper Guy Waites has confirmed his trusty vessel, Sagarmatha, is up for sale.

Sagarmatha is a Tradewind 35. Ahead of Guy’s attempt at the Golden Globe Race, which started last September, Sagarmatha was well prepared for the race at a yard in in Whitby. The forward bulk was been made watertight with an empty storage area forward for sails, and an extra 15 watertight compartments making the boat virtually unsinkable.

The boat was rewired, the plumbing was entirely replaced, and all systems were simplified to the maximum to limit potential problems and jamming.

The rig was replaced by a deck-stepped Z-spar mast of generous section changed to double spreader, that was completed with a wardrobe made by Hampshire wizard Peter Sanders.

Having completed his circumnavigation of the globe, Guy says it’s now time for Sagarmatha to move on to new adventures and possibly another Golden Globe Race.

Guy says he’s been delighted with the way Sagarmatha performed during their 288 days at sea.

Guy and Sagarmatha set sail from France in September last year as part of the Golden Globe Round the World Yacht Race.

After suffering from an infestation of barnacles, Guy put into port in Cape Town (South Africa) in December to remove the barnacles. That port call saw him moved from the main race to what’s called “The Chichester Class”, but the delay also meant that Guy missed getting to Hobart (Tasmania) before the January 31st cut off date. That lead to him be removed from the race.

But despite being out of the race Guy vowed to complete his circumnavigation and sailed on.

In February he suffered further issues when a severe storm knockdown ripped the lifeboat off his vessel forcing him to make a further port call in Hobart.

But Guy pressed on and in May he became one of an elite group of sailors to navigate Cape Horn single handedly, last month he completed his circumnavigation in the Mid-Atlantic when his return path crossed his outbound path.

Earlier this week Guy arrived back at his starting point of Les Sables d’Olonne in France.
