Sheffield’s best-rated takeaway where you can feed four for under £25
In these modern days of a cost of living crisis £25 doesn’t go quite as far as many of us would like it to.
I’m of a vintage that remembers a time when a brand new video game would have been within easy reach of that price, it was enough for a ten pint session at the pub (not advised). Back in my day you could even have bought 250 Freddos with that sort of money – that’s a stockpile.
Not to labour the point too much but it is now much more of a struggle to get the same value from £25, the Freddo ratio means you can only buy 100 at current prices (barely a pile nevermind a stockpile). So the task of finding a ‘cheap eat’ takeaway that still offers good value has never been harder, but I think I might have found a place.

Greek Gyros on Northfield Road in Crookes, Sheffield, might not look much from the outside but this little spot is riding high in terms of customer reviews. Across Sheffield, there are no takeaways that have over 100 reviews with a better rating on Just Eat right now.
What’s more, if you’re lucky enough to be ordering on a Tuesday, Greek Gyros currently participates in Cheeky Tuesday on the takeaway service. This means you’ll get a whopping 20 percent off all orders over £15.
Taking advantage of the generous discount, myself and a dining partner one mixed meze, a halloumi wrap and a pork gyros ‘main meal’ that came to a total of £28.30. With the offer we ended up having £5.66 cut from that price.
The meze to start (£7.50) was far from traditional but also a welcome surprise. Standard favourites dolmades, olives, chilli peppers, pitta, feta and triokroketes (cheese croquettes) were served with gherkins and the surprise package of pickled onions.
It all worked surprisingly well as a dish and the croquettes in particular were especially tasty. Onto the mains and this is where I think the real value of this places comes into light.
A main meal platter of pork gyros comes in at £13.50 and is far too much food for one person as shown in the picture above. I had enough there for tea, lunch the next day and post-pub snack in that box.
The gyros meat itself was well seasoned and tasty, the chips were fine, the salad was fresh and the pitta was reassuringly homely. It all reminded me of something you’d pick up at a beach-front place in Kefalonia, not the best Greek you’ll ever have but absolutely spot on for the price.
One criticism from me, there wasn’t enough tzatziki, delicious as it was I struggled to string it out for the amount of food on the plate. A small quibble after an otherwise good experience.
Now the main platter I think would easily be a meal for two, order two of those and your total would be £27. With a saving of £5.40 on a Tuesday we’re back down to £21.60 and with bag and service charge of 75p on collection we’re getting change out of that £25.
Not bad at all in this day and age. An easy recommendation for anyone in the Sheffield area.
Takeaway deals and food shop deliveries
Well-known for its takeaway delivery service, JustEat puts some of the UK’s favourite fast food within the reach of households. Along with offers on favourite ‘treats’, it also delivers weekly food shops.
Customers can order food from the likes of Sainsbury’s, Asda and Co-op, which at times is a lot quicker than the regular online supermarket order.
Click & Collect slots can often be in high demand (and come at an additional cost during peak times) so using takeaway services like JustEat or Deliveroo may work out quicker and often cheaper.
