Six defenders Swindon Town could sign ahead of 23-24 season

Tom Clayton, Harrison Minturn, and Frazer Blake-Tracy are the only centre-back options as things stand, while Remeao Hutton, Marcel Lavinier, Ellis Iandolo, and Reece Devine make up the septet.

Tom Brewitt is yet to sign the deal offered to him over the summer, and the more time passes without an announcement from the club, the less likely it seems that the former Liverpool man will return to SN1 next season.

With that in mind, Adver Sport have put together half a dozen names who are yet to sign a contract Town could look to when attempting to improve their back line in 23-24.

JORDAN MOORE-TAYLOR (CB)

Released by Forest Green Rovers after three seasons, the 29-year-old only played 14 times last term (most of which were as captain) but has made over 300 professional appearances for MK Dons, Exeter City, and FGR.

At 5’9, Moore-Taylor isn’t the tallest, but technically he is very good and would offer Swindon an experienced right-footed centre-back option. Also knows what it takes to win this division.

MATT PENNEY (LB)

Aged 25, Penney has already pulled on the shirt of the likes of Ipswich Town, Charlton Athletic, Sheffield Wednesday, and FC St Pauli, but he’s never really settled anywhere in order to play a run of games.

Said to have plenty of talent, the left-back could prove to be a gamble with plenty of upside if he is trusted to do a job on a consistent basis.

RO-SHAUN WILLIAMS (CB/RB)

Last season was the first time Williams had operated in League Two, having come through Manchester United’s academy and then gone on to play almost 100 games for Shrewsbury Town prior to joining Doncaster Rovers in League One.

Williams is a physical presence – something Town fans have been crying out for – and has some experience as a winner during his United days, another factor that is key for any new signing.

AARON LEWIS (LB/RB)

Lewis can play almost anywhere along the back line and out wide and make it look easy, so if Town were to convince him to snub his offer at Newport County and follow Flynn to Wiltshire, it could be quite the coup.

Highly regarded at County, the 24-year-old is expected to go on to better things very soon, but even just one year at Swindon could help the Robins kick on themselves.

PRIESTLY FARQUHARSON (CB)

Admittedly, some of the lure is with the name, but – on a more serious note – Farquharson also has plenty of encouraging attributes.

He’s a tall, ball-playing centre-back who can also compete physically, and his two Welsh titles while at Connah’s Quay Nomads prove he knows what is needed to win. In almost 100 appearances, he has never been sent off, and he’s only picked up 15 yellow cards.

Another who would need to be tempted away from an offer in south Wales, but the 6’3 defender could be worth it.

JOE TOMLINSON (LB)

Anyone who has watched Tomlinson play knows what he can offer. Should he remain fit, he starts at left-back every day of the week.

But while the money could be there to purchase the defender, the finances would have to change on Tomlinson’s side of the fence if he is to sign here again. Should he believe there is no future for him at Peterborough United and the lure of returning home prove strong enough, a deal could materialise later in the window.
