Southend named among the worst places in UK for a night out, data says

Whether it be the many award-winning pubs we have in our county or the different types of nightclubs, here in Essex we like to think that we know how to have a good night. One city, however, has been given a rather unfortunate title by being named as one of the worst places in the UK for a night out.

According to Get Licensed, Southend-on-Sea is the third worst place across the whole of the United Kingdom for a night out. Only Coventry and England’s capital, London, rank more lowly than the seaside destination.

To find out where are the best and worst places for a night out, Get Licensed compared a range of factors, including but not limited to: bars and clubs per 100,000 people, pubs per 100,000, the average cost for a pint of beer, and the feeling of safety when walking alone at night as per Numbeo data.

Once all that data was compiled, it was found that Southend has 52 pubs per 100,000 people with an average cost of a pint at £3.98. It was also claimed that 20 per cent of people feel safe when walking alone at night.

A spokesperson for Get Licensed said: “Southend-on-Sea is known for its fish and chip shops along its busy promenade, its amusement parks and pubs. Scoring 1.91 in the ranking for the best night outs, Southend is not exactly a night out you’d write home about.

“The seaside town in Essex scored rather poorly for its safety index score (36.55) and unfortunately had high safety concerns reported by residents, where 68% reported worries about being mugged or robbed, and 39% were worried about being assaulted due to hate crime. Southend also had among the lowest numbers for safety at night, with just 20% feeling safe to walk home alone.”
