Spain is one of the most titled national teams on the continent. They have won silver and bronze medals at the World Championships, the Olympics, and four European Championships titles, with three winning from 2013 to 2019. A slight blurring of the magnificent picture is a failed seventh place at the last EuroBasket 2021.

In the current tournament, the team led by Miguel Mendez (multiple Champion of Russia as the head coach of UMMC) started with a defeat against Latvia – 63:67. In the second game, the Spaniards improved and confidently defeated Montenegro – 78:57. Maria Konde, the Czech USK Prague forward 2017 European Champion, had an excellent match with her 20 points. Another European champion (twice), Yekaterinburg UMMC legend Alba Torrens scored 11 points.

While the Greek men’s team is one of the top teams in the world, the women’s team is typically average in European basketball. They have only once participated in the Olympics (at home in Athens in 2004) and only twice played in the World Championships. And in Eurobasket, only a handful of times, they rose above the tenth place, never even close to contemplating any medals.

Greece still has a chance to advance from the group at this year’s championship. All thanks to a victory over Latvia in the second round – 73-65. The big player Mariella Fasoula and Artemis Spanou earned 22 points each. Eleven points and 12 rebounds went to Panathinaikos small forward Eleanna Christinaki. In general, the result was made by women’s individual actions, and they were even less effective in the game with Latvia than in the defeat against Montenegro (69:74).

Victory over Greece would leave Spain with a good chance of winning the group and reaching the quarterfinals without the last 16. Of course, given the tournament situation, the Spaniards will approach the upcoming game with total concentration and probably beat the modest Greeks, confirming the status of the most successful team of the last decade. Also, they have a tremendous experience as very few have ever won a European Championship. In any case, all the players on this team have had such experience and often multiple victories.

In addition, it’s worth noting Spain’s very varied offense. Miguel Mendez’s team, especially in their game against Montenegro, can shoot effectively from beyond the arc. Still, they also have some big quality players (Heal, Carrera, Torrance) to work on the backboards and inside the three-point line. As for what the Greeks have to offer their opponent, it’s hard to say. The pressure of the “big” squad that helped Greece defeat Latvia will not work against Spain. The Greek team does not possess strong qualities such as ball movement, quick succession, or individually strong players. We bet on a convincing victory for the Spaniards, and not the most productive match, given the limited attacking potential of Greece.
