St Philips traffic chaos as £1m gas network upgrade gets under way

Motorists are facing congestion in St Philips due to £1m gas network repair work. And temporary traffic lights in Feeder Road appear to be not synchronised with other traffic lights, making the situation worse.

One driver said that he had travelled down Netham Road and gone through a green light to turn right over the bridge to Feeder Road. He said: “Traffic is accumulating as the temporary lights are out of sync with the main lights which are showing red.” He added this was causing a dangerous tailback.

A cyclist said that although Marsh Lane is closed with signage indicating the closure, motorists were still ‘squeezing past the road closed sign’.

The work is being carried out by Wales & West Utilities. Its programme controller Simon Lee said the gas network was being upgraded in the area, adding: “This work is part of a £1m investment in the area and will keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future.

“In agreement with Bristol City Council, and to keep the local community, road users and our colleagues safe while we work, traffic management will be in place throughout the project.
