Tragic mum-of-four hounded over debts found dead in mould-filled home

Tragic mum-of-four hounded over debts found dead in mould-filled home

A mum-of-four was a victim of the “complete neglect” of “a whole class of people in this country”, her family have claimed.

Karen McBride, 46, was found dead in her home in Tameside, which her family say was “in a very poor state” with black mould which made her and her children ill along with pigeons nesting in the loft. Karen was said by her family to have been “frustrated to the point of desperation” with the benefits and housing systems, having endured years of struggle with money and dealing with “uninhabitable” living conditions.

Her devastated family said the anti-poverty campaigner was prioritised for rehousing after being “wrongly pursued” over benefits debt and having to declare herself homeless. They claimed she “was a a victim of systemic abuse – which is the complete neglect towards a whole class of people in this country”, the Mirror reports.

She was moved to Stalybridge, Tameside, with two of her children but the property was said to be “in a very poor state with a myriad of serious restoration work needing to be done.”

An inquest was told about a range of serious defects at the house, including black mould which made them ill and caused black dirt to come out of their noses, as well as pigeons nesting in the loft.

Ms McBride’s daughter, Codie, said that had it not been for “systemic and police-based failings”, her mother’s death could have been avoided.
